Default exhaust questions problems

i have a 98 legacy gt wagon and a 2000 forester L both have the same thing going on right now with the exhaust. those guards rattle all the time, is there a problem if i remove them or is there some way of getting them to stay on with out them constantly rattling.

Just take them off. Both my car (1997 Legacy) and my brothers car (2001 Outback) have the shields removed, no big deal.

i didnt know if they needed them to shield something from exhaust heat, its the first 2 cars ive ever seen with shields the full length of the car.

on a side note they also seem to be the easyest exhaust ive ever seen to replace or work on. ive often thought about getting a bit more power out of the motor but i cant find a exhaust specific to the legacy modle, i can find the headers and a muffler but none of the other stuff inbetween. is there anybody out there that makes pipes just for the legacy and the forester (oddly the forester seems more nimble and is more fun to drive with the 5speed than the auto in the lgtm but it doesnt even look anywhere near as nice as the lgt), ohh and a intake filter and tube kinda thing i havent found a single one of those for either of these 2 cars, i know they are not the sporty modles but will something off of any of the other cars work, i could see something off of any other one work on the forester but the lgt has some kinda sensor sitting just behind the air box.

Most everything you're thinking about is going to have to be custom made. Most things you'll find are made for other models (like the impreza) and you'll just have to do a little modification for it to fit your car.

The sensor behind the airbox is your Mass Air Flow sensor.

I had a local garage fix the rattles with some two part epoxy putty "JB Weld" that so far has held together and stopped the rattles.

The heat shields serves to shield the exceptionally hot exhaust parts from too tall dry grass and dead leaves. Keeping these shields in place reduces the risk of fires especially if you drive off road.

ahhh thanks for the info, so all the aftermarket stuff is mainly for the imprezza and i have to modify those to fit mine.

i know i will have to replace the exhaust here soon on the LGT and from back when i was more into cars i saw the aftermarket was always cheaper than the OEM, id like more power out of either of our 2 subi"s but at least for the exhaust i do not want the big coffey can exhaust more flow but not massive noise if you know what i mean.

i can see the intake being a far easyer to modify and install that the pipe im thinking it would need to be lengthened for the longer wagon. as far as offroading them well the LGT rarely even see's a dirt road, the forester will be seeing some offroad work but only back roads and dirt roads. i know we had a blast doing parson's branch road in the smokie mountain national park last year, and my last bike trip down this spring i found a ton more roads like that all over down in NC, GA and TN so im thinking next year we will hit those 2.

i guess now my question would be where do most people get thier aftermarket stuff from on here.
