Talking My New Subie! Any Suggestions?

Hey everyone! I just bought a brand new 2010 Impreza 2.5i Hatchback. I realize that there is a ton of posts about 2.5i modifications, but I was wondering if anyone has any personalized suggestions for my car. I have a short list of things I want to do to my car, and I'm open to suggestions

Here's my list:

Tint the windows
HID Headlights (or possibly just better halogens)
iPod cable connection, or Aux cable
Upgrade stock speakers / put in my old subwoofer and amp

I really want the boxer growl back. It's missing from my stock system. I've heard various differing opinions on this (UEL headers, catback exhaust, etc). And I haven't decided what will be worth my money to get the growl back. I dont want it crazy loud, I just want it to sound beefy like a boxer should, any Ideas?

The first thing I did to the car was "get rid" of the ugly license plate spot on the bumper. I looked online and found a bunch of factory made "license pate delete's" but nothing really peaked my interest. Most of them said "WRX" or "STI" anyway. So I decided to make my own. See below:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Eventually I want to replace the rear "license plate" lights with white LED's. As you can see from the photo below, the lights are pretty stock yellow.

Anyway, let me know if you have any other suggestions. I would love any advice you can give me about the above topics, or anything else you can think of I'll keep uploading pictures when I finish something.

Here's my list:

Tint the windows: Depending on how brave you are, I would recommend 20, I got my state legal 35% and its just too light for my liking, does look better then stock
HID Headlights (or possibly just better halogens):Stick with halogens, ifyou look up in the electrical and lighting, HIDs will pretty much always glare unless you get factory speck lights (over $1000 for a retrofit)
iPod cable connection, or Aux cable:Personally, I got a new radio, I picked up the avic U310bt for a cheap nav radio. It has bluetooth, GPS, Aux, USB (for Ipod or flash drive) and SD card reader. Its worth the money IMO, Depending on your budget Id go with a higher up model, but what really attracted me to this one is that it had a removable face plate. I already had factory Aux, but I rewired it so that way I could keep the stock wiring but it still hooked up to my aftermarket (I can tell you how to wire it up, really easy)
Upgrade stock speakers / put in my old subwoofer and amp: Always a good choice AFTER upgrading the head unit, you would be surprised on how much of a difference the head unit makes

Sorry I jacked part of your thread, it just made it easier to add my opinions, but just keep in mind its opinions, Im not making your payments so its all up to you

Thanks for the awesome reply man

I checked out the avic U310bt, it looks sweet. It's double bin too so it looks like it would replace the stock system no problem. Any pictures of yours?

Should I wire it myself? I've done a few older cars with wiring for speakers and subs etc. But it's a brand new car, and I don't wanna mess anything up. You said you could tell me how to wire it, do you have a write up? Or should I take it to an installer?

Also have you tried replacing the stock speakers? I didn't see anywhere to remove the grill easily. Of course I didn't look too hard.

Thanks again, I love the look of that stereo!

Get a Sport Grill (Dealership option) and a Lip kit for the front bumper. Do that painted taillight mod and get some rims. If you are doing any headers/cat work, your warranty will be (edited "Denied")

FALSE!

No warranty is ever "voided" just warranty claims denied. Second the modification has to be the root cause of the warranty claim. If you ad a CBE and your head gasket fails at 5k miles they WILL not deny your warranty claim for having a CBE

Nice mod list simple yet will improve your car mucho. The exhaust part is still in the works

Very first modification - REAR SWAY BAR

You don't have one from the factory, but you do have a LOT of body roll. This will be the biggest bang for your buck in performance that you can do to an 08+ NA Impreza. Especially if you pick up a used OEM WRX bar. You'll need mounting brakcets from the dealer, but you should be able to find a WRX OEM bar, with OEM endlinks, for around $100.
My full list of mods is here:
http://www.mysubie.com/vehicle?id=1450

RE Boxer growl - you can get it, but it will cost you. No one (that I am aware of) makes any aftermarket header (EL or UEL) for the 08+ 2.5i. you're going to have to mod/fab soemthing else to make it fit. Also, it may cost you some power as UELs are less efficient than ELs, which is why the car has ELs from the factory, to help maximize the power available.

RE Speakers - I don't know for sure, but I suspect that you have to pull the door cards to get to the speakers. You don't remove the grills.

BTW: You can not void your warranty with a modification. What you can do, however, is give the dealer or SOA grounds to dispute/reject your warranty claim. However, they have to prove that your modification could have caused the problem. You do have to be careful, but your rear sway bar, for example, isn't going to void the drivetrain warranty. So before you let someone slap parts on your car, make sure they know what they are doing.

There is Audiosavvys reveiw of the head unit, hes one of the head audio guys on this fourm. Whats your budget though, you could end up getting one of the higher up units that play DVDs too. Ill snap pics in a few but you will need the trim piece, Ill get you links to every thing you need. Wiring in amps isnt hard at all, infact, they have a handy dandy place stock to wire the amps up to.
I beleive the door card is only 2 screws, and the rest are trim screws, I havent replaced the speakers yet, but it wouldnt be too hard. Ill help with guiding you through wiring too. If youve done headunit wiring on one car, you pretty much have done it for them all. Like I said, if you need pics of a set up or the wiring, I have no problem helping out

HID kits that work correctly are much cheaper than that. Especially if you find a set of factory HID's from a WRX/STi. It's all about the lense shape/location relative to the bulb. No halogen lense will work with a HID bulb, however. browse the exterior mod/electrical forum and see if there is another factory HID that is an easy fit into your car, like the Acura TSX HID's were in the 06-07 Impreza's.

Cat-back exhaust is perfectly fine. But headers and cats are the issue. My dealership warned me about the cats and headers as it will be a "hassle" for warranty claims.

Just imagine, If you have headers and need motor work, they will automatically will tell you that those "mods" caused the problems (back pressure, size pipes,etc...) just to get you out from their dealership. Dealership word vs your word, is the case. Sure it's not voided (used a wrong word) but denied, but then you have to find another dealership.

Ummmmm... way to be mean to the guy

Ok, so I'd add the rear sway bar to the list. As for the exhaust, you're going to need a new muffler to amplify the sound, and then an UEL header. See if the ebay UEL ones everyone gets will fit the new models. They're cheap and work just as well, if not better than borlas.

Oh.... and maybe paint your stock wheels... it makes a world of difference.

Rear sway bar and a good alignment. You'll love your car all over again. Don't forget good tires, too.

Thank you so much man. You guys have been super helpful I'm loving owning a subaru more and more every day.

I think I've settled on the deck you have. (310bt) It's affordable ($300 on amazon), and it does everything I want it to. Plus, I don't really care about higher end features like DVD playback, or multiple discs, etc. I'm mostly looking for ipod playback (and bluetooth + NAV isn't bad either). I've heard pretty consistent reviews about the poor navigation, but I'm sure it's fine for it's price range / target market.

Car toys has the mounting plate and the harness for my car. I might just end up paying them (or stereo warehouse) to do a really professional job. In order to wire the iPod cable and the Bluetooth MIC, I would have to deal with the center console and the airbags placed on the columns. They only want $250 to install, add the deck and it's still cheaper than the dealer to install a single iPod cable.

Sway bar added. Any particular brand etc? I've heard the WRX stock sway is good? Should I find a used 2008+ WRX/STI sway bar, or find another brand?

Also, I keep hearing about borla replica UEL headers from ebay, but I can't really find any specifics about that. Got a link example?

Rallitek sway bars are great. I bought a kit with endlinks from them and the car handles way better. Installation was easy too.

http://www.rallitek.com/RalliTEK-Ant...08-2010/p-4386

Add in new front end links and you're set.

My front and rear Rallitek sways are getting installed as I type. That said, it depends on what you want to do. If you are unsure exactly where you want to take the car, modification-wise, then used OEM WRX rear sway bars are a cheap wat to get the rear of the car under more control. If you already know that you want to go for a more comprehensive approach, then you miy jump immediately to something like the Rallitek setup, or Perrin, Whiteline, etc. One thing to remember, WRX rear sways are interchangeable with the 2.5i, WRX front sways, however, are NOT. The NA exhaust interferes with the WRX front sway bar. So, if you upgrade your front sway bar, buy a bar specifically for the 2.5i.

I had an OEM WRX rear bar on my car before the Ralliteks went on, and it made a BIG difference. You should be able to get one for $100 or less.

Definitely get rid of that coat hanger that Subaru calls a sway bar and. Rallitek's sway bar kit will give you the most bang for the buck. Not only do you get the sway bars, but you also get the upgraded hardware, bushings, endlinks, and mounts...all for under $400.00.

Oh, and I just bought a new license plate frame. I know it's not a huge deal, but the "carter" one just won't do.

on it's way now
