Default Car sounds like tractor, no power -- broken cat?

I "mis-started" my car this morning (let go of the key too quickly and it barely had enough inertia to crank the engine) and the car sounded terrible. It now sounds like a diesel tractor and has zero power. It can barely keep itself from stalling.

I've also had an exhaust leak in the vicinity of the cat for a while. It got a lot worse this morning.

I suspect that a broken cat may be causing my engine issues. Is this reasonable?

a clogged cat can cause all of these symptoms, including exhaust leaks pre cat. It can also cause much more expensive engine damage, especially if its driven while its clogged.

you could be relatively lucky if the starter drive gear did not retract and caused the started to fail. (they usually come apart inside and get jammed when spun at speeds well above cranking speed) This would probably be much less expensive to fix and less harmful for the engine.

I'm fairly sure that the starter motor is fine. I've cranked the car a couple of times since this morning and it's functioning properly. I just screwed up my timing this morning.

I crawled under the car and felt around. There is definitely exhaust leaking out of the rear cat. It's also pretty beat up from my many rally adventures. I may have punctured it. My current plan is to remove the pair and gut the rear cat, hoping that the clog falls out with it. I really hope that the O2 sensor is fine.

Wish me luck.

Get this.

I remove the flange bolts between the rear cat and the resonator, start the car, and tah-dah! It's fine. I must have shook the clog loose.

I guess that confirms the rear cat theory.
