Default your opinions please

HI there, I'm running a 2.2 in my Vanagon, and have been for about 7 years. I'm thinking i may have to get a new engine and I can't decide wot to do. Everyone knows the fab reputation the 2.2 has, but this is my chance to run a 2.5. My friend who does the conversions says I wouldn't notice a differance because i haven't changed my VW tranny. I think I will know a differance because it is very hilly here in the Northwest and I have learned ever since moving here from the "flatlands" that 4th is too high and 3rd is too low when keeping freeway speeds on the big hills. is the 2.5 as undependable as I hear? Everyone's opinion is welcome to help me make a informed decision.

Which 2.5 are you after? The phase 1 DOHC is a great engine, just do the head gaskets before installing it. They usually experience internal failures.

The SOHC 2.5's have external head gasket failures, and much more frequently. If you are going get a Phase 2, and are going replace the head gaskets, PM me. DO NOT use the Subaru gasket, or the updated gasket as it will fail again in short order.

I was actually thinking about getting the SOHC, because my mechanic who originally performed the conversion, advised against it. I wanted reliability so I stuck with the "bullet-proof" motor. but I have moved, and now I think I may need that extra 30HP for the mountains. but I'm here to collect a "second opinion"

Well, the Phase 2 SOHC 2.5's are great engines, after the head gasket replacement. But, if you are going to pick one up used, it's not a bad idea to reseal it along with a new water pump, timing belt, tensioner, iders, etc...
