Default VIDEO: Has your EJ22 smoked like this?

This is a shameless crosspost from the USMB. Below is a video of my EJ-swapped Brat. It's smoking like crazy. I use it pretty much only for rallyx. Have you seen one smoke this bad? If so, what did it end up being? Rings? Valves? Your mom?

Thanks.

Jacob

Let's hope so. I was thinking about a Seafoam treatment, but I don't want to dislodge something. There could be some loadbearing crud in there:-)

If you just dropped the engine in, its normal. On my first start after I overhauled my 22 it smoked even worse, and I was scared I thought the headgaskets might have failed, but it was only burning off leftover cleaning crap that was still in the engine.

Well, I finished the swap in March, so this isn't new startup smoke. It's seen its fair share of heat/abuse over the 5,000 miles since then. It started eating some oil, but that seemed sporadic.

When I seafoamed my 2.2L impreza, It smoked really bad like it should. Yours might be coolant or carbon deposits

I don't think it's coolant because the coolant looks fine and plentiful. How could I find out if it's carbon deposits?

Does the smoke smell sweet? or like oil? If it's sweet, check you plugs and at least one should be super clean from coolant, although if it smoked like that for 5000 miles, it's probably not that. If it smells like oil, my bet would be rings. Had an old Civic one time that smoked like that, and most of the rings were lined up.

It's oil. The plugs look normal, and my coolant level/color has been fine the whole time.

I'm picking up another EJ22 in a couple weeks. Aside from a two-day rallyx event, the Brat can just sit where it is. I guess I'll just check the oil every time I stop.
