Default 99LGT, new shortblock, tranny does not match anymore.HELP

well my engine went out on my 1999 Legacy gt 2.5. i bought a shortblock from Outfront motorsports everything went together great till it was time to put the engine back in the car.
------
Only the 4 main studs match from engine to tranny. the rest either have no hole or dont match up.
though it does snug up with the 4 studs, and only problem is i cant get a second bolt on the starter.
i though i researched throughly in getting right short block.. apparently not
------
MY question is, What are my options from here?
AND how many different bolt patterns are there for the EJ25?

i have not, reason being is they never said this would bolt right into my car. and i was hoping that someone could fill me in on the different block patters, because every post i read said they were all like legos.

How many bolts/studs did the original engine use? The older engine/tranny combos (like my '97) only used 4 (2 bolts up top and 2 studs at the bottom), so I'm curious if your '99 2.5GT used more than that. If it did, then you probably had one of the "hybrid" engines from the factory with the Phase II shortblock.

Anyway, there shouldn't be any issue whatsoever bolting things together. Which starter bolt do you think you don't have?

Old engine Phase II?
the starter bolt that i cant get in is the lower one that is not a stud. the hole is there but but it does not match up perfectly. there is a lip that i can feel when i slide a screw driver in there.

You need to install a stud. Then you'll be fine. Everything else doesn't matter

i dropped a 2000 forester trans into my 97 obs...there were a couple minor issues like you are describing...it bolted up ok , but i am currently only running with 1 bolt in the starter....the oem trans i took out had 1 stud one bolt...and there are two less bolt holes in the engine...however...the whole assembly tightened right up and has been working fine for the last 10k miles... the bolt pattern on the engines are the same EXCEPT for the fact there are two fewer bolts..i.e. 4 instead of 6
you should still be able to make it work...you may have to punch out the guide pins to line everything up for final torquing

Easy fix. Take one of the long bolts. Grind about half of the head off so there is a flat side. Put it in through the bellhousing from the engine side so it sticks out like a stud. Put the starter on. Put a nut on the bolt. The flat you ground will contact the inside of the bellhousing letting you tighten it up. I do this all the time.
