Default Advice needed for temp fix on peeling/cracked clear coat

Here's the short version: bird crap stayed on the roof too long and destroyed the clear coat.

The first pic shows the clear coat actually peeling. The total affected area is about the size of my thumbnail. The part that's peeling is the size of my pinky nail.

The second pic shows the clear coat all cracked and nasty looking. Total affected area is about the size of a half dollar.

I've read that the only way to really fix is to repaint. Can shops just repaint the affected area or would they typically have to repaint the whole roof?

I have a little bottle of clear coat that came with my rim touch-up paint. Can I use that as a temp fix to try to stop the clear coat from peeling for the first pic?

Better/cheaper solution? Vinyl wrap....it's what I'm doing. Subaru paint sucks ass and I don't feel like shelling out 2k+ for a decent paint job when I can dole out half that for vinyl.

You wrapping the whole car? I suppose that might be another option for the roof.

if the area is between the black roof/side seam "drip moldings" I would have a semi-gloss or flat vinyl wrap done. its trendy, but it will cost little.

That said... in a controled area like the main roof panel, or a trunk, hood, single door, or fender, they can usually carefully sand the clear & then reclear... its an '02 that , from the looks of it, hasn't had much in the way of proper care, sorry... just sayin' . the trick with OE paint is staying AHEAD of it instead of trying to fix problems after they pop up.

If a bird cut loose on my wife's '04 Mountaineer or my just returned home today, freshly painted, '04 WRX Wagon, I would use anything handy... bottled water, soda from the gas station... ANY liquid.. the sticky will do less, the carbonation will do less than the stomach acid & plant acids from bird poop & acid rain...

anyway... can you take a wider shot of where exactly the 2 areas are? are they on the same panel?

That can help make a better low-cost recommendation.

Rob - yup, it's an 02 and yes, the paint has seen better days. I tried to be vigilant on bird bombs, but these two got me real good.

This pic isn't my car, but I marked where the cracking/peeling is happening. The cracking is happening on the mark on the passenger side. The peeling is happening on the mark in the middle.

I actually don't mind the look of a gloss black roof. It would definitely be a lot cheaper than painting even if the shop could spot treat.

If your paint is peeling/cracking there already, be sure to clean and wax your hood scoop. The plastic parts were the first to peel on my '98.

an after thought... if you're going to try to DIY, having mangled my own hood scoop trying to fix a spot that looked very similar to yours, I'd say you should start with a new coat of clear or 2, let it dry then sand it down. I found out REALLY fast that the clear coat is #1 much thicker and #2 much harder than the actual colored paint. I had sanded through the color paint within seconds using only 1000 grit and water, long before I had managed to "round" down the edges of the peeled clear coat.
