Default Oil Leak

I am in the process of a timing belt replacement on my 2006 2.5i Impreza wagon. I found a small oil leak behind the timing cover. It appears to be "weeping" from the right piston service port plug on the driver's side above the water pump. The leak is small but enough to wet the lower center timing cover gasket to the point of swelling and failure.

Is this leak area common?
I am planning on getting a new plug seal and resealing the plug threads with threebond 1105 per the factory manual.
Any suggestions otherwise?

thanks,
Z

shiny green!

Default same here

I have a oil leak coming from the timing belt cover as well. I haven't opened it up yet, but I suspect the same problem. Not to hijack the thread, but is there any else it could be besides the piston service port plug? What is a piston service port plug anyway? Any suggestions would be helpful!

It's common for stuff under the timing cover to leak. Mine is too, usually it's the cam or crank seal. Just like everything else, seals on rotating parts wear. The piston service port is used for wrist pin insertion. I've not heard of many instances of leakage, but anything's possible.

^^ Funny I said that. Mine was leaking from the same spot, the wrist pin access ports!
