yes, every one knows that =o)
but that's not entirely true these days
and you have the option of locking the center differential
also Subaru's with automatic transmission awd system works differently
from awd with standard tranny
and as far as i know beginning 2004 standard transmission Subaru
have permanent four-wheel drive with vehicle dynamics control

to notjustforshow
this particular vehicle is meant to be driven strictly on dirt, mud and snow
and being a stage rally driver for over 14 years and now doing tsd's
i couldn't help noticing that $10 mud flaps do exactly the same job as $100 ones
don't you just hate when wet muddy snow sticks to rocker panels?
so, i'm gonna spend saved $200 on something else
...and this car won't look like the previous one

for tora

Cool to hear you're planning on taking up stage rally. Let me know if you need a hand or anything. Although in reality, you have as much experience stage rallying as half of the time I have been on this planet... so you're a step or two ahead of me. haha.

Have you heard about the Rally-x 's that started up in Hope, B.C.? It is apparently a pretty tight course (not much out of 1st gear) but it is a competition event and run on loose gravel in a closed area for under 50 bucks. Even if they aren't loved by all yet, with our support these events will grow and have more to offer the drivers.

I was considering buying replaceable material (soft rubber or some kind of plastic) and just figuring it out from there. Like you said yourself, no matter how pretty it is it will do the same work (if built right). Call it what you want, but I'd rather be cheap than ignorant to the cost-benefit ratio.
