Question OT: Having few issues with starting vehicle

So this is totally OT, but it happens to me once in awhile (about once a month).

Basically and very randomly, when I attempt to start my suby (5 speed manual), you need to depress the clutch and then turn the key to start the car (duh)

But. . . . sometimes when I do that, the car doesn't start, there is no crank, and nothing happens. I know that there is a positive electrical connection because everytime I attempt to turn the key to start position, the radio lights and gauge instrumental lights would turn on and off.

I've tried taking out the key, and re-inserting the key and repeating the steps to start the car, but nothing happens.

Like for today example, I was stuck at the airport parking lot for 2-5 minutes trying to start the car, and after inserting the key a few times, depressing the clutch a few times, I finally had a spark and it cranked.

So i'm trying to figure out what issues or problems I should look for. The plugs, ignition coil pack, and plug wires were replaced at about 10-15,xxxkm ago.

The battery has yet to be replaced ever since I bought car, and so has the alternator. Timing belt and other maintanence items are due, as I've reached 100,000km.

Anyone experience this crazy wacked out situation ?

What say you?

Maybe the clutch cancel switch is loose. next time it happens, get down there and wiggle it & the wiring to the switch. if it starts, that might be your problem...

could be a electrical problem, but it's most likely that your starter is going bye bye.

as rs420 said most likely the switch
to check starter make sure she's in neutral and short starter relay contacts.
it should crank every time
but even if it doesn't no need to replace starter,
usually removing starter and cleaning relay contacts takes care of the problem

Sounds like bad starter relay contacts. You battery sounds fine.

"I finally had a spark and it cranked"

Remember it needs to crank before it sparks. Subaru calls it the Magnet switch Assy and it does not look servicable, but you might be able to replace it.

have you tried to re-bleed your clutch cable with new fluid?

with the stock tranny and clutch and parked on a slope, i used to have that problem. used to have to pump the clutch pedal a little then it would start up.

+1 on that most electrical issue's are bad grounds, also clean your battery post's, use electrical lube, on them and the yellow protectant spray. You can also check the connections on the starter, but if the lights are dimming turning off on sounds like a connection lose or toasted battery..

check your grounds first, then battery, neutral safety switch and starter if it`s not a bad ground or battery
