Question Ding advice

I checked back about 7 pages and didn't see anything, so I hope this hasn't been covered.

I've got several small dings all over my Impreza (hazards of working at a grocery store and having a crappy parking lot at the apartment complex), and a few are through the paint down to the metal.

I can't afford a body shop at the moment, so would my best bet be to sand the areas and spray on some automotive primer? If so, what grit paper should I use?

Winter's coming and I don't want any rust.

Now I've heard from a coworker that if I just leave it primered it'll rust anyway... any truth to this?

try cleaning the area with a solvent to remove any dirt/moisture that would initiate the rusting process. then use clear coat to seal the metal. at least until you can afford to get it done professionally. Sanding it down yourself might mmake things worse if you dont know what youre doing... it will only expose MORE bare metal.

Why not go to the dealer and buy a touch up kit for about $25 and use that. And make sure to clean the areas like stated above. It will look alot better than primer!

Best bet is to clean the small ding areas that are down to the primer and then use some factory touch up paint.
Get the subaru touch up paint, not the generic ones you can buy at the auto stores.

Ordered the touch up from the dealer (silly Regal Blue being out of stock).

Unfortunately, I do have a couple of spots that are down to the bare metal. Hopefully I'll be able to afford to hit up a body shop next year (trying to pay down credit cards at the moment). So I'll have to pick up some clear coat for that too.

Thanks everyone.
