Default Exhaust valve failure.Help/advice needed

Took my car in and was told by the mechanic that my cylinder 4 mis-fire is due to a bad exhaust valve. How bad,I don't know. When I asked how much to fix it he said he wouldn't due to the miles and that it would probably cost me less to find a used motor.Well im considering replacing the valve myself or maybe buy new complete heads cause I dont know what im going to find when I take off the covers. He said that the intake side of things are working fine and im getting good spark. The exhaust valve makes sense due to a dirtier plug and dirty exhaust pipe.I was thinking also a wrx swap but not sure on the cost.If I could find a used EJ22 that would be nice, then iI can swap parts without messing with ecu and wiring stuff.Any advice would be most helpful as im not sure what to do(or what funds and the wife will let me do).Until then I will just keep driving since its had this issue for awhile. If I were to do a WRX swap would I just need the engine, wiring harness, and ecu? and what about putting 2.5 heads on the 2.2,how much work would this be? Thanks for the info.

Well it will probably be cheaper just to buy an used motor. But you probably wont know till you get the heads off of your current one. On a wrx swap yes technically all you would need is the harness and the ecu and the motor. But it will put alot of stress on the rest of your car that isnt made to take that amount of power.

I dont know how much money you had but I just got a DOHC EJ25 for $1200 with 70k on it had my buddies shop install it. Resealed everything, all seals replaced, new clutch and radiator for $2400 total.

If you're handy with a wrench and can read english....get ahold of a FSM for your car. Subscribe to techdocs at subaru.com (might have to look around a bit) and download everything for your year and model.

You can replace headgaskets and reseal the important stuff while the heads are at a local machine shop getting a new valve and seals. (unless you feel confident to do this yourself)

A full engine gasket kit goes for around $250 and includes everything you'll need except that valve. A typical valvejob of inspection, seat cutting / lapping, and valvestem seals should run about $200. If you can eat this cost and do the rest of the labor yourself....it'll be cheaper than sourcing a newer motor and making any changes that need to happen should it be a different motor than what was in the car originally.

What part of MI you from? If in the SE....get the head(s) to me and I can replace the valve, seals and anything else short of cutting new seats.

Without knowing how many miles on your engine and it's service history, it is hard to recommend either repair or replacement. If the head gaskets haven't been done, a complete job would cost you less than 1000 dollars if you do it yourself- and it will be fun! ( that includes new valves) Doesn't matter what you see under that rocker box cover-- the repair procedure will be the same- pull heads, replace gaskets, get heads to machine shop, replace bad valves, do timing belt and water pump, idlers and tensioner. All these, except head gaskets would need to be done on a used engine anyway.

I just did the timing belt and pumps and idlers.the car has 187000 miles.I have a friend looking at getting me new complete heads from Subaru.so I may go that route.still like the idea of getting a used motor and doing a complete rebuild.I think I can drive this car quite a bit longer as is.
