Default first try at auto x with my sti :)

Hello all , my bro-inlaw invited me to his Porsche auto x day , last weekend , . Super fun and cheap . My time got better , with every lap , but was still way off the best time (6 sec slower than a vette )
It's to bad the club doesn't have a auto x days . It's alot cheaper than a track day , and it all about driver skill , and not about how much money you can through at your subaru .
Fun !!.... I'm hooked

You need to sign up for the autoX school. Lots of seat time and you really get to practice all the different autoX elements over and over again.

I believe the next one should be the UBCSCC autoX101 sometimes in Sept.

Club auto-x events would be fun and would definitely attract more participants because of the lower costs involved.

I wish that I never waited so long to try it out.

Hey Kin, you have to come out and try it. BTW Daryll should quit trying to part out his car especially the rack gear.

Kin, it's completely different. It's more competitive- you're timed and it's solo! Course lay out is always different so no one really has an advantage. Cars are grouped by level of prep... it's fun!

It's also a lot more social. For the 6-8 runs you get, you're doing course "work" for over an hour where you just BS with your buddies.

You got to try it. Like Jay, I'm not sure why I didn't try this eons ago. This is my first season and it's ridiculously fun (and I've been doing track days for 5+ years..)

I agree, once my Miata gets a new engine I will be doing both track days and auto-x but it was auto-x that really got me into motorsports. I learned a LOT about the car by doing that and I would recommend for people starting to mod your car or thinking about modding your car to go auto-x your car in stock form first and you will really see what the car needs to improve handling. Power is WAY less of a factor in auto-x than it is on track days and you can get a very fast/competitive auto-x car for less than it would cost to have a very competitive track car (depending on your competition).

I started auto-x with a BONE stock (including 195 RE-92's) 2001 Legacy Brighton WAGON. The amount of roll that car had was ridiculous, to the point where people thought it would tip. Sway bars, springs/shocks, ALK and a good alignment were added soon after and the car was a different machine. New wheels and tires made it a very fun auto-x car despite the size/weight. I even walked away with a class win or two (against well prepped Nissan Sentra SE-R's and other's).

Can't wait to get back out with this new group of enthusiasts.

i started out in auto-x about 8 or 9 years ago for about 2 or 3 season, it's fun but it's nth compares to track days! I rather spend 6 auto-x days for 1 track day (that's just for me, I can work more days that way) but don't get me wrong, auto-x is fun but you will find yourself more competitive if the car is prep for auto-x (which I think it's not practical for daily, yet track car is somewhat daily driveable). I will usually try a new setup at auto-x before I get onto the track tho, that way I can learn more about the setup before I start going in a faster speed (which I don't normally get to do on the street).

daryll, didn't know it's your first season for auto-xing! are you going to KSC? i'm still trying to see if I can get that weekend off!

Eric, yup, it's my first season. Car isn't even set up for it.. but it's sure fun with crappy tires in the STI. I'll be entering KSC but more than likely be driving someone's car.

And you make a good point about autox and testing your set up before track. It seems a lot of people make the progression from autox -> track as they want to get more seat time and speeeeed.

daryll, I don't need to be very competitive (to others) in auto-x but at least I know IF the setup is right and IF i'm getting any better in time (like you said, timed Solo event). With such a small amount of fee, what else can go wrong (better than ruining a lapping day with a wrong setup!).

there is no way your tires are crappy, mine was stone hard with the age and just sitting lol.

I wish I have someone's car to enter KSC but my bro's is in SM-F, even less competitive than mine lol...

Yep "started out" in autox a long time ago back in my UBC days.

I don't think we hated on the guys with nicer cars, but the fastest time for a few days out was some guy's parents taurus (non SHO). There was a miata which would dominate everytime it came out, and at the bottom of the list were the guys who just got a 2002 WRX and had not learned how to drive it yet lol.

was that a white one or blue one? there used to be two very quick one back then...

I love the way KSC works, I remember the only canadian that can enter top 5 was driving a stock sentra SE-R, most of the SS or SP guys were only up to 6 and 10 and they are very fast drivers (yet the PAX time killed them).

White!

I don't remember a blue one, but yah, all the times I went out none of the really nice cars were even in the top 10. Talking about the new S4 (at the time), DC2R, WRX, etc. Even in TSD through the city none of the nice cars had good scores lol.

Me?

Probably not in my STI. She's getting old and high km's so trying to keep from undue stress.

Will probably do track days on my bike down the line!
