Its wheelbase is actually a bit shorter than the new 3er, and Cadillac claims it will also be lighter. I like the exterior, and love the interior. I hope it has a good steering and a well sorted out chassis.

The Cadillac ATS compact luxury sports sedan may have leaked onto the net earlier today, but the representatives of the GM luxury brand did manage to keep one big secret… a secret.
At the car’s official unveiling on the eve of the Detroit Auto Show, GM North America President Mark Reuss confirmed that along with three gasoline engines the ATS will be available with a diesel powerplant. Reuss didn’t provide any details on exactly what that diesel engine could be, nor did he say when it would arrive. Instead, he told the assembled journalists that the ATS will get a diesel powerplant “within its lifecycle” suggesting the oil-burner is still a long way off.

Given the way these two manufacturers have been rating the power output of their turbo engines, I don't expect to see much crushing.

That's fair. Of course unless I'm missing some upcoming update, the 328i doesn't have a turbo engine. The turbo ATS sounds like it will have some 40 more horsepower and possibly be lighter to boot. So he still has a point.

The new 328i is going to have the same 2L Turbo as the 2012 Z4. Rated at 240 hp, dyno'd at 233 whp on 91 octane fuel with a very wide power band.

For comparison, a 220 hp Regal Turbo made 177 whp.

Point taken. Although, It looks like on that dyno graph that the turbo is not pumping like it should, as it should hit a peak torque and stay there. Similar issue with the Sonata turbo, I wonder if they are not packaging the inter cooler properly.

Still, The 2.0t in the ATS should be comparable to the 328i motor. (not crusher...okay...I overspoke...I'm sorry...it won't happen again...beer and the internet don't mix...). My point was that the 2.5 190hp was there to hit a price point and is not going to be marketed to anyone who would know what horsepower meant.

Of course if they drop the 318hp(their numbers, not mine) V6 in it, it might prove more interesting...or , dare I dream and I know we are talking much higher price, a turbocharged V6?!

An ATS 4 with 318hp might actually make me want to buy an American Car again!

It's coming out with three motors:
2.5 NA 4 (190hp)
2.0T 4 (270hp)
3.6 V6 (300+hp)

2.0T is only one with stick option.
I think V6 is only one with AWD option
TTV6 (@380-400hp) rumored for ATS-V

There a lot of TTV6 rumors swirling around, but my honest feeling is it will get an LS3 (or perhaps more likely the next gen DI small block).

A high-performance NA V8 will hardly steal sales from the beastly supercharged LS9. Ask Camaro owners. As long as the power and economy is class competitive (which is >450hp at this time), I don't think the American consumer is going to mind the extra cylinders. If anything it strengthens the familial bond with the big-brother CTS-V. Is Mercedes dropping the V8? I don't really follow C-class news much, to be honest.

My feeling is just that since the ATS-V doesn't seem to be on the fast track at the moment, I'm guessing they wait to make the V to coincide with the mid-model refresh. And to me that time window puts it around when the next-gen DI V8 should be ready. And I'm guessing the power target for that engine will be at least 470hp (to ace the Dodge 392 and provide a nice boost to the next-gen Vette/Camaro), which puts it right where it needs to be to slot in against the M3/C63 AMG.

I could be totally wrong too. There's a lot of rumors about this supposed FI 6-cyl, and usually where there is smoke there is fire, especially when it comes to GM rumors. If the off-the-shelf DI V8 hits the power and economy targets it needs to in order to be competitive against the class, it just seems more likely they use that than some super-V6 that'll probably need to be built in Wixom that so far has no other rumored applications. I'm probably wrong, I just have a feeling.

I dont see how v8 with DI and the expected 3400lbs weight would be a bad idea or a big gas guzzler.

Id take a DI v8 any day over a v6tt , plus im sure it would be a lot cheaper to use a small block too

Refresher: The 2013 Cadillac ATS sedan will go on sale later this year and will come with a choice of three engine units. The based model will carry a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo engine making 270-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. A 2.5 liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder will also be available, making 200-hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. The top-of-the-line Cadillac ATS will be powered by a 3.6 liter V6 making 318-hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. Prices will be announced closer to launch.
