Default Installing a tach. in a 97 Brighton?

My cousin just picked up a 97 Brighton coupe. The odd thing about the Brighton's is the fact that they have no tach! The spot in the dash is blanked out. I am thinking that I can get a used one at the salvage yard for a reasonable price. The install on the otherhand may be a witch. How is it installed, and what do I need? Does it plug into the ECU?

I'm thinking you might need to get a whole cluster. And just maybe all you have to do is plug and play. Never done it before tho, never heard of anyone doing it....except on Ford trucks, it works great.

Swapping guage clusters on Saturns is plug and play too. ExCept you gotta verify mileage on saturns, it stores in the guage itself.

Have you considered getting a stand alone tach? Autometer?

Heck, I've never even been in a Brighton before.
This doesn't help does it

I can't actually tell you if it's plug-and-play, but I can say with some certainly that it won't be easy to get the whole dash apart to swap it. You'll also never have an accurate milage reading again, which you may not care about since it must be out of warranty by now.

If I were you I'd install an aftermarket tach on top of the dash. I put one in my '88 Tercel (also no factory tach). I put it to the left of the wheel at the base of the A-pillar. It's pretty subtle there, it's easy to run the wire down under the dash along the door frame, and you can see it clearly, unlike the RS tach that hides behind the steering wheel. And you don't have to take the dash apart!
