Default Hella Supertones or Stebel Nautilus Air Horn?

I'm debating between the Supertones (118db) and the Stebel Nautilus (139db). As you all know, the Supertones can be mounted facing outwards from the grill. However, the best placement for the Nautilus, that I have seen, is under the driver's headlight (in an '05 STi) and facing down so nothing can get into the compressor. Since the Nautilus is mounted in an enclosed area, which will be louder, the Supertones or the Nautilus?

This has been covered in many threads...the 2 horns sound VERY different. There are a few guys in my local club with the Supertones, and I have the Nautilus. It's difficult to say which is louder, because of the different sounds. If you have a db meter, find someone with both...and measure As for mounting the Nautilus, I have mine in the front of my '06 off to the driver's side of the grille. You have to mount the Nautilus nearly straight up and down for it to work properly, and the compressor intake points straight down. I have been running this setup for several months now, trouble free, even in rainy Vancouver.

If you get a Nautilus and put it down inside the bumper somewhere, its gonna have all the glory muffled when you beep. It wont sound as loud since its lower and blocked by plastic and metal!

The supertones located in the top grill are a direct shot at someone who cuts you off. If you get quick enough you can blast them right in the ear thru their back or side window as the turn in front of you. (funny when its a convertible with the top down)

scares pedestrians if they ever purposely walk in front of you too. just be prepared if they throw something at your car in return.

Well the problem is, the Nautilus is 139db and the Supertones are 118db, 21db difference between them, (for every 3 dB there is a doubling in sound, so there is 7 doubling which is 2^7) making the Nautilus 128 times louder than the Supertones and I'm wondering whether or not the bumper cover would negate that difference.

edit: and if they happen to both be just as loud, i'd rather get the Nautilus, costs less and it won't attract any thieves looking into your grill.

My Nautilus appears to be the same volume as a local's supertones, maybe a little louder...but they obviously sound different. I have my Nautilus in the centre grille opening of my '06...and it's invisible from the front Oh yeah...the Nautilus costs about 1/3 of the supertones as well. Nautilus FTW!

I'm not worried about looks or ease of install (both are easy to install), I just want to know which one is louder or best bang for the buck.

PM me for my install pics of the Nautilus if you would like more creative ideas.

Mine are quite loud, I have not compared side by side with supertones but I definately prefer the more "German car" sound over the more "American" type sound.

PM sent and I believe the Nautilus sound is supposed to be Italian, not German.

I have both.
Supertones behind the grille and the Nautilus behind the fender.

Suggestion to indelible. Get both. They compliment each other very well.
The front firing Hella gives you forward coverage, whilst the Nautilus gives you perimeter coverage.

I would get both, but I don't feel like spending that much more money on something that I wont use that much.

Any hints on Stebel install for an 09? I'm trying to decipher if the stock horn has a relay or I have to wire one to run the Nautilus. I think I'm going to mount it on the center strut near the stock horn, but lower down.

The sound pressure figures advertised are usually very misleading.

The Hella Supertones and Stebel Nautilus both have the same output at 2 metres 118 dBA.

The 139dBA for the Nautilus is at 100mm or 4 inches.

Well, since someone bumped this thread into this year already...

My fiancee wants louder horns for rush hour. I have Supertones now but she's trying to decide between the Supertones and the Stebel Nautilus. The reason the Supertones might sound louder is that they're in a frequency range to which the human ear is more sensitive.

However, what I'm really here for is to ask you guys who have had the Nautiluses for a while if they still work. I'm hearing some rumors of poor reliability with them. Any truth?

I've had one on my motorcycle for three years: granted it doesn't see winter weather.

I particularly like them because they don't make people angry the way a diaphragm horn does. While loud, you can give a short beep and it gets attention without making them try to kill you....
