Subaru Stars Engine Ideas

I have a 2000 subaru impreza RS 2.5. First off, it is currently broke down because of an issue with the engine. This engine was a recently installed used 2.5, unfortunately it started showing engine warning lights after its short warranty had run out. I hooked up to the car and read out the codes and it showed up as cylinder 3 misfire. I changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and checked the coil pack for cracks etc. None of these fixed the error, after I would clear it it would come back sooner or later, it did seem to trip the error at low rpms though it seemed. While on a trip to Cincinnati the car broke down. It did not over heat, or at least the gauge did not show it. I have not taken the engine out of the car to look at it, but if i try to turn the engine over it makes an awfully bad noise. The only other time before hand that I can think of that anything out of the ordinary had occurred was at a red light. When I pulled out it felt like something dropped out of the engine. I'm not sure what it was because the only thing I can associate the feeling with is possibly when you drop gears, but I hadn't. This was a few weeks prior to the break down, but I did not drive it very much in between.

My current predicament, I have 3 grand to spend to fix it. I would like some ideas on what I should do with this thing. I really like the car and I wouldn't mind fixing it, but I'm a little wary on buying another used engine. Does anyone have a trusted website/shop for engine rebuild or re-manufactured engines. I've tried looking at a few already, but I'd like some positive backing from a well known Subaru website on some sites or at least a shop. Would I be better off throwing in the same engine or would now be a good time to put something else in with the money I have. The only things I've really done to the car is a greedy stage 2 clutch, and blizzak winter tires haha. I currently live in the south eastern corner of Indiana, any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Well build it up to either high compression in which you'll have to run 93 octane or more,or do a wrx swap keep your heads and do some type of engine managment tune so you don't have to swap out harness. or buy a used N/A block

Thought I posted this but I guess it did not,

This is a video of me starting the car up. It did turn over, which was to my surprise because it would not turn over before.

Damn, that's a bad noise. Does the engine have any oil? Sounds like your bearings are toast. If it does have oil, drain it and check for shiny shavings, those were your bearings.

Alright I'll have to take a look at it once I get a chance. Thanks for the advice ill keep ya updated.

Edit* Checked the oil today, drained it out and ran a magnet through it. There was no metal to be found in the oil. Any ideas on what else it could possibly be than?

Copper isn't magnetic, so you won't see it from that method. You have to LOOK in the oil and see if there's anything shiny. Use a bright light to help, like the sun.

Check your flywheel/starter teeth. I wonder if the starter isn't disengaging completely. It's held on by 4 bolts and is fairly easy to remove.

You can pull the rocker covers and see if the rocker pivot....tubes are bolted in correctly. You can separate the engine from the tranny to see if any bolts backed themselves out of the flywheel (is this a manual or auto?)

Were you able to tell where the noise is coming from? Either side of the engine, front/back?

Open the timing belt inspection cover, how's the timing belt? It really sounds like you're going to have to start removing things to make sure they're bolted in all the way. Take pics of anything questionable and we'll look at it.

Alright, well I'll have to wait on screwing with all that since I have work all weekend. I removed the oil this morning at about 10 am so the sun was up and I couldn't see anything in it at all. So I'm fairly certain that there was nothing in it.

edit* heh i said 10 and i posted at 8.... well anyway. It was bright enough outside at the time that I didn't need to use another light to look ha ha.
