Default 2.5 Air Filter....

I need to get a new air filter for my 2002 Impreza 2.5.... are there "good" and "bad" air filters.... or are they all about the same. I don't do any performace racing or anything like that.... just want to keep the air clean for a reasonable price.... it's been more than three years since I have replaced.... ug!

Secondly, is it a hassle to install.... I would imagine not by looking at it.... but if there are any tricks to make it go easier, I'd appreciate that too!

Best!

i tried a k&n filter for a while, but dirt and road salt collected pretty badly on the filter seeing as how it is oiled. i now use stp paper filters. they have a metal edge all the way around and keep their shape as you try to get the airbox around them.

you may find a telescoping mirror and a flashlight handy to have when changing the air filter. three years on the same filter? you gotta get a new one.

The K&N and all the other oiled gauze filters filter poorly and often foul the MAF sensor's probe which can cause erroneous MAF voltages to be observed by the ECU. There have even been documented instances where engine oil analysis showed abnormally high silica (dirt) levels. Oh, they resulted in no power gains.

The OEM filter is a good build quality so it's probably also a great filter. Any quality aftermarket paper filter should also be a good option. For stock and modified engines, the paper filter is not a restriction.

I've stuck with paper through the years. Cheap and effective at keeping out particles. You won't gain anything from changing it, so why spend the extra $$$.

I put in a standard paper filter. Seems to fit just fine.

I posted a link to a photo of the old one I took out.... what is that dark spot?

Stick with paper, and change it every year. Cheap and effective. Don't forget that both the NA and WRX Imprezas have the same air filter, so it's more than sufficient for our NA's.
