Default Help? Motor dead... Swap?

so my motor is done... it's either rod knock or a piston. i don't really have a lot of money, and am going to have to take out a loan, whether it's a stock 2.2 motor or a swap. i'd like to keep it under $3k if possible for the ENTIRE swap, because i can only afford a $100 payment per month.. i'm just wondering what you guys think i should do, and if you know where i can get the donor for cheap.

if it's going to cost more than $3k i'll probably just put another 2.2 in it.

this is the car, for anyone that hasn't seen it.

You should easily be able to buy a 2.5 motor for quite a bit less then 3k hell refurbished 2.0 Wrx motors are less then that.

If you need to keep it on the cheap then just throw in another 2.2. All the wiring will be the same and it shouldn't take longer than a day as long as there are no surprises.

There's a 2.2L on KSL for cheap. Half tempted to buy it.

Swaps are expensive and not worth it if you have to take a loan out.

yeah i'd rather not take out a loan... but this is kinda the opportunity to swap it... so that's why i'm looking into it.

plus my clutch has 70k on it so i'll probably replace that too. i just got done paying for my wheels and struts and stuff, and was pretty excited to have an extra $100 a month. and the 2.2 is fun enough for my daily driving.

so with my budget i'm leaning towards just another 2.2. i know i can find one for cheap, but i took it to my mechanic today and he found a 2.2 with 40k and they are asking way too much for it, i know i'll find a better deal, but hearing that price made me think "might as well swap it if i have to pay that much."

i love my wagon way too much to sell it. i want to swap it way bad, but my health lately has kinda been limiting me on finding a better paying job. so i'm kinda stuck at my $8 an hour job until my health decides to stop being lame. not that i don't like my job, it's great, it's got a lot of perks... just not money or car perks. haha.

Assuming from his user name he drives a 99 which is OBD2; so his option of going JDM is unlikely and not a bold move. But yes JDM clips are cheap and wiring is cake. If you want a wagon project I know where you can find one for $1,500.

oo doo tell And help me find an ej20g front clip while you're at it I might end up doing the swap myself if I can find a front clip, save myself a couple bucks instead of buying a car with the swap already done

Go to a pick-n-pull and get one for $50, thats what i did when my motor died in my old wagon.

Instant 2950 profit. Or you can just snag a 2.5 EJ251 block and drop that in, as long as you run the 2.2 heads it should run a-ok .

+1 Hes my room mate and while he does drive a leggy and knows a fair bit about em he can definately help. he also knows a thing or 2 about 2.2 wiring.

I also think a USDM Wrx swap would be a good way to go. I dont think the wiring would be that bad, and there are a few people here and on rs25.com that do harness merging for people and are legit.

Merging isn't too bad, it just takes a couple of days a lot of patience, if you are going the swapping route make sure you have a full FSM on both cars before you start. And go usdm unless you have one hell of a hook up on emissions .

Hey Todd, I know a 2.2 swap is cheaper but these guys have complete WRX swaps for $3500 shipped.

If you don't have the money for a FI swap then don't swap it. Don't get into deeper debt over a car; you'll get over your head then you're forced to sell it. Stupid decision man...

If you need your DD back then just get either a junkyard 2.2 or 2.5 for cheap and call it the day.
