I think this would look amazing if you could get a black or grey stained glass style paint so that the chrome shine still came through the paint.

^^^either dupli-color or krylon (I forget who to be honest) Sells a black chrome spray paint. Its black paint designed to be used over chrome so it still shines through

^definitely an option. The owner of these tails wanted them to match his headlights which are a gloss black. He's running a white car with black wheels, headlights, tails, etc so it should match really well... as for the blinker, it will still shine through. The vinyl isnt that thick

...isn't the vinyl just over the reflector...the blinker is one of the two big clear sections...so the vinyl isn't blocking any light at all? I'm pretty sure, right? The lights look great though! I think what would really look amazing if you painted everything with that black chrome spray paint first, then tape off what you did, and then hit it with gloss black. I think it'd look a little smoother and would give more of a murdered out look without actually cutting down on the light output much

Winter, thanks for the compliments. So what you're basically saying is the tail light would be all black and the area around the LED's would be a black chrome? I havent had much experience with the black chrome stuff but it sounds interesting. Maybe on a future project for myself i'll give it a shot.

Im actually working on a project for my 07 sti right now. I sent my amber head light reflectors out to get vacuum metalized in chrome. My entire 07 sti headlights will be chrome. Im pretty sure that company can do the same thing with black chrome so I could always send tail lights out to have them done this way. Problem with that is the turn around time.

Yes, so essentially picture your tail lights, but everywhere it's chrome now would be black chrome. I think that would look really cool as well as yours that you've already done. But yeah I have no experience with the black chrome paint either, I just saw it online saying how it's meant to be used over chrome surfaces.

All your work looks professional and it sounds like your headlights will come out great as well, sorta like the new 12+ headlights how they're all chrome (once they're cleared). Sorta like my 09 haha

Great work these look awesome. So any chance for a write up on this? Want to give it a shot but I don't know what tools to use, where to cut, how to re-seal etc.

Has anyone done any sort of formal write up on these yet? Ever since I saw the first picture, its really caught my eye as something I want to do. Haven't the slightest idea how though. Also, if anyone has pics of their finished versions, photobucket has dropped all of the pics in the thread, I'd love to see. Thanks!

Somebody get this man a set! I really like this, props for some great work. I would love to attempt this, I would need to find a junked 08+ and grab the tails off that.. no way am I risky enough to try it on my daily driver.

Glad someone brought this thread back, I had never seen it before. I have a few of the pictures saved to my computer, never knew there was a thread on them.

It's been a while since anyone posted on this, but I was wondering how this would look on a black car. Also does anyone have the cut lines I would use if I wanted to attempt this DIY? Also any way to get some sort of flat LED inside the inner tail light? I really want to light up the inners while I have them apart.
