Default confused on starter/flywheel

After a long month of rebuilding my engine I finally got it in the car last night. Everything is hooked up, has coolant/oil and all that good stuff. But I have run into a problem that has confused me and my friend that is helping me out. I tried to crank the engine to start getting fluids in it but the starter just made a loud noise like a ghost was in my engine bay.

It sounds like the starter isn't syncing up with the flywheel...I just went to go see if the starter was in good condition at the local auto shop and they said it was just fine

so has anyone else had this problem and has a solution to this problem? I've been searching but can't find anything I just want my car up and running already! Thanks for the help!

did you pull the plugs to prime the oil pump? If there's no compression, you won't hear much. Did you forget to install the timing belt?

the plugs are pulled and yes the timing belt is installed. Everything is installed and put on just like it was before we pulled the engine out. The problem is, is that the engine isn't even starting. The starter motor is just spinning in place, so it's not cranking the motor

LOL, I love that.

AFAIK, you can only install the starter one way, the right way, it doesn't fit the other way.

Is this starter the one that is correct for your application?

What starter are you using, what engine do you have, and what tranny are you using?

did you ever get this problem fixed? i am having a similar issue, i just rebuilt my engine and i had the wires disconnected from the coil packs instead of pulling the plugs... does that make a difference? but mine scenario is a bit different, when i plugged in my battery to turn it over to prime everything and get oil thru the turbo oil line, anyways, i plugged in the battery and it sounded like the starter made a loud screeching sound as if i turned the ignition and it was already started. but my key was not in the ignition turned to the off position. everything else was plugged in correctly to my knowledge. anybody have this issue, HELP please. thanks in advance.

sounds like your + cable is touching your energize wire on the starter or you solenoid is stuck.
