Talking WOW! disconnected my muffler....

While doing some searches on exhaust systems, I read that some WRX owners removed their muffler and ran a straight pipe from the cat. I didn't have the piping, but I disconnected the muffler and removed the bolts and seal and got the muffler flange to sit above and behind the cat flange, so the exhaust system looks like its still connected. But now that the exhaust flows right out the cat, this thing sounds like a beast! I love the low RPM burble, then the boxer sound at WOT. I love driving through tunnels now and revving it. Some kid in a riced out hyundai on the other side of the highway had his jaw drop as I floored it as a light turned green. Hahahaha, I say about 2 more days till I get a ticket for a loud exhaust.

Should have heard Deus' car when we started it without tightening the header bolts.

If you want that thing to be louder, spend the dough on a good cat-back, cheapboy!

Damn, some people really don't like what I did . No, it doesn't sound like a beater, disconnect your muffler and you'll see what I mean. I'm sorry I don't have a ton of money that I can go out and buy $500 exhaust systems for my car, some of us have restrictive funds.

Not bustin your chops about what you can and can't afford. Just don't like stupid loud cars. Put the muffler bachk on and save up for a used catback like I did. Used borla catback for 250, sounds great to me.

I did the same thing taking my car to the exhaust shop to have them put a cat pack on it (they didn't want to put the header on becaue of the Al heads, said they are to easy to strip, ) and yes the car idles nice and burbely. ANY percent of open throttle leads to obscene noise. I went WOT once just to see what it would sound like. It wasn't pretty, and I didn't do it again.

When I got to the exhaust shop the floor above the end of the header was pretty hot. The car is not made to have the exhaust exit underneith it. In fact there is a law that says that they exhaust must "exit" the vehicle. You could also be polluting yourself with some really tasty exhaust gasses as well. If you drove for quite a while, and gave yourself carbon monoxide poising and killed someone, you could have real problems if they ivestigate you car.

If you have to make all that noise, just go to a muffler shop and have them put a straight pipe from the cat/mid pipe back. It will be loud, you won't be endangering anyone and if you just get the muffler section replaced it will only cost $100.00 or so.

cheeRS,

Greg

Remember, the turbo and extra cat in the WRX makes us straight-pipe WRX owners a lot more sedate than your 2.5RS.

Just something to keep in mind.

What's wrong with what this dude did? WRB_WRX removed his muffler and put a glasspack with a tip on his rex and that thing sound Wicked! It's not louder than stock but it sure has a lower tone to it. I love the way his ride sounds. It's almost like hearing a well tuned V-8 but without the blump blump blump to the sound.

pillaka...More power to you braa...

That is absolutely awsome. I would love to run a straight pipe from the cat back. For all those saying this would sound bad and getting on his case about it:monkey: :monkey: :monkey: . Straigh pipes sound awsome on subarus, espescially fast ones. There is an awsome guy on the board who goes by Pipercub (Moderator), he has a 3" straight pipe from the turbo back on his RS-T. The thing sounds like a damn racecar, its awsome. And it wouldnt sound much different on a stocker, just lacking the spooling from under the hood. Some of you need to get a life, or learn to support you fellow members who have the balls to do this.

GO pillaka!!!

Cheers,

Chris.

actually it would make a huge difference.. turbo cars sound WAY different then NA cars... plus the NA cars like the littel extra bit of back pressure where as it would be more efficient to run a straight pipe on a FI car.

My brother ran a stright pipe on his 2.0 Accord. (He didnt feel like paying for a muffler) It was loud, backfired often, but strangly....sounded better than most riced out cars on the street. Weird, he got a better sounding car because he DIDN"T want to spend the extra money. Go fig.
