Default Buying a new Subaru from Washington?

I'm thinking of getting a 2011 WRX 5 door from the States. Has anybody done this before? Can you recommend a dealer?

I've heard some dealers will sell to Canadians and some won't. The dealer in Bellingham said they would but they're not allowed to sell for anything under MSRP. Is this true or B.S.?

Thanks!

Thanks! Tons of information there. Unfortunately he's no longer one of the dealers who'll sell new cars to Canadians

I believe Subaru Canada has forced Fuji Motors to tell SOA/US dealers not to sell to Canadians or else they get fined or can lose their dealer license. And they also are voiding the warranty if the car is out of country/never been insured in the USA. These things are always changing every year and each car manufacture has different rules plus RIV is always updating changing things as well. Also if you do buy from a dealer make sure they include the recall latter as many car manufactures in the states have been charging up to $1-2 k for it.

I really hate the fact many manufactures have blocked x-cross boarder shopping, I understand the reason for it but at the same time they should have the same selection, colors, limited models etc as the states.

It's easy for them to bypass the rules by selling to a US "holding" company that then resells to the Canadian buyer. However, with the dollar hovering around $0.95, and the aggressive pricing from Canadian dealers, it's worth checking out local dealers to see what they can do. I bought my Tundra locally because the $950 savings (after tax and fees) just wasn't enough to justify going through the hassle of importation.

My STi was a different story though. Back in 06' there was a lot to be saved. We're talking $8000 less than the same car from Canada. Now that's worth going south.

Did you initially register the car in the US?
Because that's the key. The dealer must sell to someone who is registering the car in WA state. Being that we're not US citizens and most of us don't have an address in the US, the dealers can't sell to us.

Unless you have a condo in Seattle, or a cabin on the beach, you can register the vehicle to that address, then import it after 6 months or so.
