Default Turbo issue...

Hey guys, I was driving my car up to a cabin this last weekend and noticed my turbo gauge was acting strange. When I go full throttle my turbo will go up to 16lb like normal then drop to about 10lb then back up to 16 back down to 10. It's rather quick and I dont feel a HUGE pull-back when it drops but you can definitely tell. I took a quick video on my phone (Sorry it's sideways) but you can get the idea. This was on the freeway, going about 70 in 5th and I punch it the entire clip. (about 8 seconds)

Any idea what it could be? I've never had this happen before. My car has 96k miles, it's an 05 with a stage 2 AP and a COBB DP.

As always, TIA.

Steve

You are getting boost spikes. Re flash your base map. That has always fixed it for me.

I would be more concerned that you are driving on a wall.

I had that exact same problem with both an Acccessport and OS tune on my 2005 WRX. It didn't matter how many times I flashed my base map it kept doing it. It did it primarily during moderate outdoor air temperatures and at high altitude. The guy who tuned my car landed up getting rid of it by getting an HOA BCS and adjusting the WGDC to get rid of the boost spikes. Once the spikes were managed the ECU stopped over compensating.

This is apparently a common problem on 2005 WRX's and there are a couple of threads about it on WRXtuners. Mine was bouncing between 9 psi and 17 psi and hit fuel cut twice.

Out of curiosity do you have aftermarket intercooler hoses? I didn't start having problems until mine were on.

Interesting... No I dont have aftermark hoses. I've had it flashed for seriously 3 years and never had a problem. I'll have to plug it in and see what it says. I'll do some more searchin to see what others came up with. Thanks for the insight.

I was having that issue too and sometimes still do when I'm not WOT, but my main issue I believe was my intercooler gaskets. I had installed an aftermarket Y pipe and also had taken the BPV off a few times as well and never installed new gaskets any of those times, till later when my injectors were installed. seemed to fix the primary issue, and I think it kind of does it here and there in 5th on the freeway and when I'm not WOT but I also don't have any kind of heat shield on my turbo, so I'm hoping once I get something back on it should help clear up that issue.

but also Cobb's AP maps are more of a general tune as well, they work great and I loved it when I had it, but it seems that if you go OS the tuner can get it more exactly where it needs to be.

see if you have any leaks maybe or maybe your turbo is getting worn maybe I don't know. haha when you get it figured out make sure to post the issue in case that's anyone else has that same issue though. Like me!
