My situation is that I've yet to get my hands on a 6spd, I'm waiting on what deal do I end up getting. But the thing is that I already PM'ed about them and he gave me the information I needed right away. Good luck and I hope you can enjoy your car again really soon!

I'm sure you know this but....
Try and get same model years... I got EVERYTHING needed to do the swap but only NEED Tranny, driveshaft, rear diff, and a pair of these wonderful hybrid axles!!! If you get different versions than yours you run into needing hubs, brakes, rotors etc... just more money and more work...

There is something everybody should know about suberdaves races.

They lasted through the Olympus Rally attached to my insta-torque EG33 and even posted a #9th fastest on the toughest stage.

So I needed to install an R180 diff with my 6 speed swap, but did not want to install the rear R180 rear hubs.

So I did some research and found that the inner cup of the R180 axle shaft could be joined to an R160 axle shaft with the aid of a custom CV race.

I did much research online and made many long distance phone calls and found a CV company that could make me the custom race that I needed.

Problem was that like many things in manufacturing, they would not make me just 2, I had to have 10 min made.

So if anyone else wants to do this same thing... PM me I have extras to sale...

left is 2005+ STI inner race center is custom STI / WRX Race Right is 2002 WRX inner race

This is how it works.

You must use 05+ STI inner shafts with 8 balls on the race and cage. the 04 and earlier have 6 balls and will not work with this custom race.

First take apart both shafts.

Remove the CV boot clamps. if you do this right you can reuse them.

Next remove the retaining ring holding the inner joint together.

Next the Snap ring at the end of the shaft.

and it is now apart...

Now put it back together using the WRX shaft, the custom race, and the STI inner joint.

And now you have a custom shaft to install your R180 diff in your Subaru using your stock hubs...

Hi Dave,
Just wondering if you still have any inner race center custom left.
If so how much are they and postage to Australia!
I have a 99 WRX with R160 rear and want to put a R180 and will this work with my axels.
If it's ok could you please give me your contact details so I can phone you as it's easier than sending messages back and forth
Thanks Mark

Bump. I'm a little confused on what I need.

I have a Type-RA drivetrain and if I install the rear differential, would I need the 6 pointed ball to install the rear axles to my current hubs?

Or if I upgrade to stock WRX rear brakes, would I not need these "hybrid" axles?

These are for people using R180's with non-STi rear hubs.

So if you upgrade to stock WRX brakes, and are using the STi R180, you need these hybrid axle parts.

Thank you Dave for saving us 100s of dollars!
I got some '03 WRX axles and after sliding the hybrid inner race onto them it looks like I will have to remove some material from the shaft after the spline as well since the snap-ring groove is still hidden. I'm guessing I'll have to remove 1/16".

That's tricky to do. There is a chamfer that acts as the stop, and what you are essentially try to do is move that chamfer down the shaft a little. I measured to the OD of that chamfer with a pair of calipers and when I was done trimming the end of the chamfer was moved approximately .071". It is essentially trial and error though. My races also had a chamfered side and a counterbored side. I put them on with the chamfered side towards the snap-ring groove.

I used a die grinder and the laid the shaft on a table, splines hanging off the end. I rolled the shaft along the table while grinding to get as even a cut as possible. You want to make sure you blend the cuts in and don't have any hard edges steps in there that will act as stress concentrators and could lead to axle failure.

I'm having the same problem. With the races on, the snap ring groove is covered up. Since the axle has a chamfer as a stop, I assumed that the race would go on with the chamfer on the side of the chamfer on the axle, and the counterbore side pointing towards the end of the axle where the snap ring goes. Either way it doesn't fit.. =(

Bust out the dremel. It's quick work.

Awesome!

I've been running DSS conversions for a few years, gonna have to pick some of these up and convert the other axles I have for spares.
