Talking a'pex RSM

WARNING: do not install one of these in your car, it will result in wanting to drive in a non-sane fashion all the time.

the RSM is basically an a'pex magic box that measures RPM, speed, accel/braking/lateral G's, distance, 0-100m 0-400m 0-1000m times (with wheelspin correction), 0-100kmh time, wheel horsepower, lap times, 60 second replays of any of the functions, and mid-range acceleration (user defined range)...and i'm sure i'm leaving something out...

PROS:
+ on board telemetry makes even your most mundane motoring task fun.
+ R34 GT-R style G-meter. need i say more?
+ seems to be reasonably accurate, more so than a G-tech or other similar device.
+ easy to use.
+ TONS of functions.
+ much cheaper and less dorky than a 5th wheel.
+ fits nicely in an open DIN slot, with some behind the scenes ghetto rigging.
+ finally, an ENGLISH manual!

CONS:
- leads to lots of unsafe behavior.
- wiring diagrams are for JDM ECU's, so have a shop manual handy.
- silver casing is attractive, but VERY noticeable from outside the car. an option for black would be nice.

other notes: the "optional" G-sensor required for most functions, but is sold separately...? not a gripe at a'pex, but strange...and make sure to brush up on the metric system...once again, not a biggie, but i'd imagine lots of people whining about it's lack of 'Merican Measurin' Support.

no, it doesn't make your car go faster or handle any better, but it gives you a clearer picture of the abilities and limits of your car...being able to consistently gauge and clearly see the handling thresholds of your car, rather than saying it feels like it's about to do X, is invaluable.

not too difficult, since you're only tapping into 4 wires: speed, rpm, ignition power, and ground. but since there's not a clear pin out in the manual, you need to get ahold of a proper shop manual, or someone that really knows their way around wiring, so i suggest finding professional help.

i kept trying to test my 0-400m time, but there's still way too many people out and about at 4am on deserted roads... don't people have anything else to do? i kept having to shut it down early, and ended up with a 17-something...blargh...trouble...this thing BEGS for it...

i did pull a nice 0.7g turn on a completely soaked road. and somehow the speed sensor on the car went crazy during a rev-match on a downshift, and told the RSM my car was going 1400 kMh. tomorrow it NEEDS to stop raining so i can go out in the middle of nowhere and put this thing through it's paces.

this would be awesome if you could record like 60 seconds of G data then download it into Excel to log all your runs at an autocross event...

that's the only other flaw i could find with the unit...there's no way to output data to a laptop or something, but oh well...i don't see myself watching something like that more than once or twice immediately afterwards...but if i had a camera mounted in my car, and a way to sync it up with the data output, that would be super sweet. another 30 seconds of replay memory would be nice too, since most courses run slightly over a minute.

but for the price of the unit, and everything it does, you really can't complain too loudly...

i just wish i had this before i started modding my car, since i've only had it to the strip once or twice.
