Default I'm a tard - did I fry my EGT gauge?

It was dark, it was pouring and I was just finishing up installing my defi's. Everything hooked up, powered up. Didn't have time to tap my EGT gauge so I left the sender/sensor unplugged.

Turned it on , everything worked and EGT needle would bounce off the high end as if there was no reading, no sensor plugged in (as it should). Didn't think anything of it and took it for a test run. Came back, popped the hood and realized the EGT wire (metal braid coated) was touching the positive side of the battery...

Wire where it touched melted....****. It's only 2 wire for the sender so I cut the bad section off and reconnected. Plugged in sensor cable (should now read 0 since it's not tapped) Still bouncing ****

What do I do, how do I go about troubleshooting this?

I would check the wires for shorts, if they are not shorted I would test the gauge by plugging in the sensor then heat the probe w/ a propane torch and see if its is functioning. if the wires are shorted you will need to fix that. Also what defis are theses?
