Default Built motor newb ?

I just got done looking at/riding in a 04 wrx with a 2.5 hybrid motor. It has a built motor minus the head. Im a newb to the whole built motor, when it idles it kind of sounds like it has a knock, however i dont believe it does because he boosted well and all the readings are perfect. A friend of mine says that its most likely normal because its built, my question is this true?

Sorry for the ****ty details he told me the list of parts and all but i cant remember them all specifically.

Thanks in advance

Do a leakdown test...
This will show you the health of the motor.
Knocking is never good. It could be a spun rod bearing, piston slap, etc...

Leakdown will show all
