Default License Plates in UT

Hey all... quick question.

How anal are UT cops with enforcing the front tags? From what I've seen about 25% of cars don't run with one, and I'd honestly rather not have one on my vehicle if it isn't absolutely necessary. Seeing as the Impreza wasn't designed with a full front-tag enclosure it just bolts to the top and hangs there, which looks like ass.

Thoughts?

I took mine off after I heard they didn't require them, although I have also heard that they can't pull you over for not having one, but can give you a ticket for not having one if they pull you over for something else. in fact I don't have one on my wifes car either. I wouldn't worry too much about it, not till a cop gives you a hard time about it.

also I was pulled over for my tinted tails I used to have and I didn't have a front plate and he saw my front before my rear and he didn't even mention it.

yeah front plates will be a second offense.
some cops are anal about it, but most likely you wont get hassled just for no front plates.

"Enforcement by a state or local law enforcement officer of the requirement . . . to attach a license plate to the front of a vehicle shall be only as a secondary action when the vehicle has been detained for a suspected violation. . . ."
Utah Code Section 41-1a-404.
So, you can't get pulled over for no front plate, but you can get a citation for it once you've been pulled over for something else.
I've never run a front plate on my miata or 911, and haven't had a problem.

Secondary violation... heheh I'm good to go then. I'll just keep the plate in the car under the passenger floor mat or something. I don't drive this car fast, but if I do get pulled I can always just toss it up on the dash and call it good.

Also, just out of curiosity... has anyone tried mounting it on the bottom of the lower opening? It looks like it might fit and I don't have my plates yet.

The majority of cops are ... period. However most of them still go by the books.

If they pull me for no front tag and don't cite me for a primary violation (seat belt, speeding, etc.) then they can't cite me for no front plate. Some folks would probably just pay it... but I'm all for going to court if/when that happens.

In the 16 years I've been driving I've never had a front plate, nor been sited for not having one.

I've never been hassled about it, Utah should just do away with the front plate, it would save them the cost of making two plates.

Don't be a jackass on the road or during a traffic stop and you'll never get hassled for no front plate. It used to be a first offense, but as a second offense now it exists purely to punish the morons.

If there were actually traffic cameras than the front plate law would make sense. That is about it though. Havent had too many officers slow down infront of me to run a plate

Yeah... NC was considering front plates in 2009, until they did a cost analysis of making a 2nd plate for the millions of vehicles registered in the state.

LOL I would have taken it right back off in the police station parking lot.

Actually my car very rarely sees the surface streets, my apartment and my work are both about a half mile from 215, so I don't see many cops anyways.

if an officer cites you for no front plate then it either means he is a UHP trooper or you are being an ass-hole. Haha outside of those two situations it should never happen

SLC parking cops write these tickets 24/7. My wife's TT got slapped as well as two other cars nearby. not a parking ticket but a no front plate ticket. I called and the kind person and they said it outpaces parking tickets by a long shot. http://www.slcgov.com/courts/traffic/plate_infrac.htm check it out. Just get one of those really cool trucker plate frames with lady silhouettes and wear that front plate proudly.

I assume this was in SCIC... so it's relevant to this thread how?

Or don't park in downtown Salt Lake City during the daytime hours when the meter maids are on the clock.

Haha, interesting.

Again, if no front plate is a secondary violation then how can they site you for it unless they are citing you for something else as well? I'm thinking they write those tickets hoping people will just pay them and say to heck with it. If I get one without being ticketed for a primary violation I will be going to court... because to follow the letter of the law they can't do that.

Had a trooper ticket me (and threaten to ticket me again) in Washington state when I had my plate in plain sight in the windshield. I had bought the car in California with no front plate or provision for installing one. I took the ticket to court and the judge cut the fine in half. I ended up screwing the plate directly to the plastic front bumper cover to avoid additional harassment.

It's never a good idea to give a trooper, deputy, etc. any excuse to pull you over.
