Default intake crossover question (I'm 17 and done want to spend alot of money)

i have a 1998 ej25d jdm in my 98 forester and I'm looking at a Injen cold air intake. the one from Injen is about 300 bucks, but I found one for a 2007 Impreza 2.5i. my only real question is does anyone think that my engine could get messed up from that since mine is a phase 1 and not a phase 2 ej25 like the 07's. really need some help because I found the 07 on craigslist near me. please help!!! thanks in adavance

Read the thread stickied at the top of this section and DIY a hybrid if you're on an uber low budget.

...or just plain don't do it, cos your money is better spent elsewhere if it's so sparse!

I don't believe anyone has any proof the thread stickied at the top of this forum has any applicability to the older cars. Having had an Injen CAI on my car for ~8 years now with no ill effects (still using my stock MAF after 202,000+ miles, no driveability issues at low RPMs, etc etc) my thinking is that the sticky thread does not apply.

And my own dyno testing, and that done by Sport Compact Car on their '98 RS project car many, many moons ago, are both proof enough for me that there is a worthwhile performance gain from the CAI.

As to the question at hand, looking at Injen's website, it would take some work to make the '07 variant work on your '98. The '07 CAI has a port to install the MAF sensor, but your '98 doesn't have that style of MAF. You would need to figure out how to block off that port, get a MAF adapter to bolt your MAF to, and probably cut/modify the '07 CAI tubing to make room for your MAF to fit into the system.

I'm with Pat on this 100%.

I've been running an OBX CAI (same design as the '98 Impreza Injen CAI) on my car for years without any problems. You can feel gains in the mid/upper rpm's and I didn't notice any loss of power down low which some people complain about. All in all it is a worth while mod for our cars.

If your on a budget try this:

you will need this to make it work:

I can 3rd this opinion as I've used an Injen on my MAF setup of the 96-98 vintage. Acutally still use a weapon-R tube on one of the cars.

That said, one can also use a stock torquebox from a MAP car and the ganzflow-type tube while still making room to fit the MAF inline. It's a good setup as well.

Apologies to the Injen faithful; the guy says he's on a budget, so I directed him to a thread that gives some direction on how to make an intake on a budget.

While the topic's been brought up, does anyone have any sensor log evidence that the resonance problem doesn't also apply to the older cars? Interested, is all.

$300 for an intake?... You gotta be out of your mind. If you absolutely must get one, get one from the classifieds used.

With that said, I'd side with the crew saying just not to get one and to spend your money elsewhere. $300 is crazy.... especially on an NA car where actual gains are minimal.

I was lucky enough to get mine from Patrick. It needed repaired, but I knew it going in. The only "expensive" intake I ever bought was the setup from 42Autosports (dot com). It actually performed better than the Injen in my opinion.
