I've been in the tuning scene for a bit, but being this is my first Subaru I have a question I would like answered, no matter how complicated the answer may be. So my question is, what would be the main problem/thing to look out for when building a hybrid motor? This is with an 04 wrx and the shortblock i will be using is coming out of a 2.5 Legecy...

1st off how much power are you looking to make & what is your budget?
I am not an engine builder, but I have been running a hybrid for over 2 years. I would have to say the biggest issues are compression, clearences (piston/wall), oiling, and knock/detonation. For compression you will need a thicker headgasket or better yet contact Equillibrium Tuning for their services. For clearance you will need the right pistons, personally I have custom spec CPs. Oiling issues can be helped both with the right clearances and a good oil pan and pickup (06+ Sti pan and killerB pickup). Lastly, knock/detonation should not be an issue if you have a really good tune and run the right compression. |

well i'm gunna be only pushing maybe 18 - 20 psi on the tdo4 if it (the turbo) can handle it. i'm not looking for big power atm just something reliable because its my daily and I'm having a hard(ish) time finding a EJ205. Plus the labor/parts is gunna run me about the same amount anyways i decided to go hybrid. Will i need to swap out the pistons or should i worry more about the compression?
