Default Could this be illegal?

So I was looking at one of those aftermarket lighting websites when I came across this device to make your brake lights flash rapidly for a few seconds when you hit the brakes, and then stay illuminated until you take your foot off the brake. I have seen ambulances use this as it is a safety feature, but wouldn't this be considered illegal on civilian vehicles? Impersonating an officer?

(I am in no way considering these for my vehicle, just found this interesting)

No, it is not impersonating an officer. However depending on your state laws they may still be illegal. Usually the law that makes them illegal is the one pertaining to which vvehicles may have what color flashing lights. I've seen many a motorcyclist who use them, and mercedes has even included this in one of there cars previously.

Legal here, it was OE on a Mercedes for a bit.

I have such a module from another vendor and I installed it to make the third brake light pulse.

The module I have is not a flasher, meaning the bulb does not flash on-off-on-off. It instead acts as a modulator whereby the bulb comes on dim-bright-dim-bright, for a total of 20 times in the first 2-seconds, and then it stays bright providing you are keeping your foot on the brake.

It maybe illegal, depending on your state, if the lamp actually flashed on-off-on-off.

I hate pulsing brake lights. Ever been in a traffic jam behind someone with one of those things? Talk about getting a headache.

Yes, when it's an ambulance with 6" to 8" square high-output LED lamps.

The one I have does not pulse like that. Meaning the difference between dim and bright is just enough to be noticed, but not to the point where you think you are in a box and then stuck out into the sun, if you know what I mean.

Is it worth getting? I know around here we have plenty of insane drivers so maybe a slight "attention grabber" could help.

I had sequentials on my 95 RMS. 4bulbs over a 2 foot strip (long tails), and they looked good

Pulsing Brake Lights would be annoying.

Anything will help. You will need an LED bulb for the third brake-light if you are wingless with the lamp inside the car. AFAIK, the STI and WRX wing lamps are already LED's?
