Question Question for John Felstead .....

John, looking at the Dukeries Rally web page I found "B 13" class cars ..... what is this class ? , is this kind of a A8 with local homologations class, or an "open" class.

Hey guys, I got home late last night, superb event! Thanks J, for letting him know.

Class B13 is basically an Open Class. We run to GroupA/WRC engine rules (34mm restrictor on turbo's or 2.5 litre N/A) but the normal restrictions on GroupA/WRC cars regarding homologated parts doesnt apply. The leading cars in this class are ex works WRC/GroupA cars. For example the car that won was a Focus WRC that was used by McRae, the car that came second was Carlos Sainz Subaru 555.

We can actually make the cars much lighter than the works spec homologated cars. Our own car is a GroupA Escort Cosworth with a WRC spec engine. The front fenders, hood, tailgate are made from Kevlar. All the glass except the windscreen is perspex. Because we dont have to stay within homologation rules we can mix and match parts and modify how they work. For example we have a 9" rear diff and 7.5" front diff on the car. You could only get a 7.5" diff up front on a LHD WRC car and we wanted to stay RHD so we moved the engine 5mm sideways, relocated the steering rack and made it work.

So basically, it's not a homologation class, but it does have rules on cars you can run and how far you can go with the mods. It's aimed at allowing engineering inovation and keeping the costs down. If we were to compete in the BRC we would have to put the car back to full GroupA spec, it would cost us a lot more to run and be a lot slower. Our car as we built it is as fast as a 400K works WRC car yet it cost us 50K to build.

We compete in the BTRDA National championship as it is the leading forest championship that club level competitors can compete in without being millionaires. (and there are a few of those we are beeting. ) There is a great mixture of full spec WRC cars and homebuilt club level cars. We won the 2 litre championship a few years ago and almost wont overall in 1999, leading for 6 months. We were only out on 2 events in 2000/2001 but are now back competing to try and win the championship.

Thanx John .....

Nice class, homologation=expensive .....

Were can we find more information/pictures of the Peugeot Cosworth (I think the driver is Andrew Burton), that car looks more like an Group B car than a Group A car.

Andy's car is a one off space frame construction, very much along the lines of the GroupB era. The rules allow this type of car to be built as long as it meets MSA safety regs. We still have 6R4's competing against us on some rallies.

Basic spec is a 2.5 V6 Opel Cosworth modified touring car engine, gearbox is a sequencial 6 speed made to order by hewland (think its hewland from memory). The front and rear diff is from a groupA Escort Cosworth. Suspension is one off. The car has electronic gearshift on the steering wheel, just like the Peugeot WRC cars. The body moulding originally came from an Ice Racing Andros trophy car but has beem modified extensively now.

Andy and Rob are great guys, very much clubmen rally guys who love the sport and are very aproachable. Andy is actually a potato farmer, he owns some of the largest farms in the UK. He is a brilliant engineer too and always runs interesting cars. His Alfa Ferrari was awesome in the forests, you should have heard that!
