Default Grinding at Idle?

At idle (and even during acceleration) there is loud grinding noise coming from under the hood. At first I thought the bearings in the alternator were shot or on their way out but the alt is charging fine and after putting on a different alternator the grinding was still there. I thought power steering pump but turning it by hand didnt produce any grinding and running the a/c also made no difference.

Ideas?

It's not heat shield grind, it def. sounds more like a bearing on something going out grinding.

Timing belt idler? That's what happened to me. Then it blew up.

Assuming that's the culprit how common is it for those to go bad?

Car has 161k, timing belt service was done at 105k

Could be the AC idler or AC pulley itself. Both of those were bad on mine. I couldn't hear either by turning the engine by hand, but when the belt was off and I turned the AC pulley, I could hear the grinding/whining noise. Same thing with the tensioner, although it was easier to tell it was bad than the pulley.

How would I go about checking the idler pulley just to be sure? There are no metal shavings in the oil so I am somewhat certain it may not be a timing belt issue vs an idler pulley issue.
