Default Importing from other provinces

I've looking for a WRX in BC for a while already but there isnt much in the market and close to my budget. I'm starting look further to other provinces, as far as Quebec.

I'm wondering anyone have any experience importing a car from another province, especially the cost for transporting the car into BC.

I really dont think i will want to drive a car from QC back to BC.

I cannot comment on the import costs, but I can say I wouldn't buy a car from Quebec... they tend to have a history of becoming largely made of rust very quickly. I saw them for sale as well, and was slightly gutted at what the price difference was - this was short lived until I did some reading about how long Quebec and Ontario cars last.

+1 for NOT getting a car from over there, rust buckets, they salt the road super bad, im not sure how subarus hold up to it but my 98 Jetta had alot of hidden underbody rust... ( my whole foot area for the passanger behind the driver was rotted right through)

Don't do it!

If you want extra work in getting a car, at least buy one from the US and save a little money.

+2 for not getting a car from there...after living in Montreal for 25 years and watching all those cars rust....stay away unless they are about a year old and were properly rust proofed ( ie drilling and removing body panels...not just under-sprayed)

Mechanics here will freak out when they see the rust and every nut and bolt have to be heated first...its common in QC but here I've heard of them not following quoted prices and going hourly for work.

If its a cheep car your looking for and dont think you'll keep it long and willing to sell it for less later then go ahead. Cars from the lower mainland will last much longer and better investment in my opinion if you're going to stay here.

When you go back east and you see newer cars like 06+ mazda 3's rusting out around the fenders...

A lot of the "good" deal WRX's in the autotrader in QC are usually American rebuilts too...be careful...at first I wanted to bring a WRX to Van but the prices weren't good enough to justify the shipping and rust

Got my mint MY04 FXT from AB, drove her back to BC, saved myself all in about $2k including fees and taxes and what not.

When I was working for a dealership, we had a car imported from Quebec and I must say the car WAS a crap of rusted junk metal. None of us had even guts to present it to a customer.
On the other hand, my MY09 Imp originally came from Toronto. I got it there and shipped to BC when I moved back to N.V. shipping cost me roughly $900 right to my door. In order to register in BC, I had to do a safety inspection that cost me roughly $170. Thankfully, the car only spent one winter in Toronto, so it still is in top condition.
I originally had plans to get a MY05 or MY06 CTS or X-Type AWD, but all of the used vehicles I looked in 2009 already had rusty frame.

So, my point, be ready to spend about $1200 on top of the cost of the car if you want it shipped to BC. Most cars from the East will have rusty frame/subframes unless it's treated with AT LEAST double layer of undercoating.(still, some exposed metal will show rust)

If you can, get your car from AB like adamlloyd, because in Calgary at least don't use salt for their winter. They use fine gravel to increase snow traction.

+ whatever for not from QC, also beward of AB as you don't have to register the car with previous history, ie I can buy a car in QC, reg it in AB then reg it in BC and you only know that it was reg in AB.

Thanks for the tips.
Yea I'll stay away from the east then, since i guess my budget will only get me
a 02-04 WRX, which means a lot of winter time.

So just in case I do buy from another province, any tips to where to find companies that will ship cars, or any recommendations?

My car was shipped by "J. Simons"(http://www.fasttracks.net/) They had the lowest rates for being the actual shipper.(no middle man)
It took them about 2 weeks from Toronto and they actually let me ship a set of winter tires in my car. The car arrived at my door on a flat bed. Had no issue.

Other top class shipper is "Hansen's".(http://www.lhf.com/) Lots of auto manufacturers (Toyota, Subaru, Honda, etc) use their services.

The problem with the fine gravel is the paint shows it where it catches. my skirts, just in front of each rear wheel, where they ever so slightly flair appear to have been rubbed raw as if by 150 grit glass paper. But at least the frame and underbody are rust free, well free enough for a six year/170,000 km vehicle.

look on craigslist in seattle, portland or cali. just get inspections and RIV done and get a recall letter from subaru USA. look for a stock one though, don't get a modded one...
