Default KN Air Filter fit issue/question

It's time for my first air filter change in my '09 OBS, and I figured I'd go for a K&N lifetime filter. But I am having some trouble with it fitting.

I checked K&N's site and I have the correct one (33-2304), but can someone help me out here?

It's a huge PTIA to get into that filter box and there's barely any room to take it out. My intake has a wire bound to it, so unless I disconnect it, it's not coming up. But really the issue is that the fins do not fit forward into the airbox. They are wider than the OEM filter by 4-5mm.

I'm probably just missing something stupid, so let me know if you've run into this before.

Look at page 11-17 in your owner's manual. It shows the fins horizontal. Rotate the filter 90 degrees so they are vertical. It doesn't go in with the fins pointing the same direction as the original filter. The filter is not the same size all around. It will fit. I just installed one on my 2011 OBS yesterday.

Blech. I knew it was something stupid. I'll try that tonight. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, that solved the issue. I was trying to install it with the fins going the same direction as OEM. Once I turned it, it fit. Not terribly easy to get all lined up, but just took a minute of futzing with. Thanks again.
