Default 1997 outback sport interference or not?

I might be able topick up a 1997 outback that the timing belt snapped on and I have searched on line and some things say the motors are interference motors and some places say they are not. I will be paying next to nothing for the car and fixing it up and most likely reselling it. Any help would be appreciated

I had the same question when I was doing the belt on my '98. I came to the conclusion that...

Quote:
SOHC engines became an interference type in 1997, when compression ratio was increased, along with other changes.
Here is my thread:

Quote:
The SOHC EJ Subaru boxer engines were non-interference engines through 1996, run by a single timing belt driving both cams (both sides of the engine) and the water pump. Because they are non-interference engines, if the timing belt fails, the engine of the models up to 1996 will not be destroyed. The oil pump is driven directly from the crank shaft and the waterpump by the timing belt. All DOHC and 1997-up SOHC EJ engines are interference engines, if the timing belt fails the engine will likely be destroyed or the valves & piston will be heavily damaged.
I've researched it hardcore before and found it's '97+ models and all DOHCs.
