Default Legacy Recall! Are you affected?

Anyone else get this? We just got ours for the '99 Legacy...

Quote:
Program Number: WWG90

Year of Recall: 2002

Program Title: Air Flow Meter Sensor

Summary:
Subaru of America, Inc. has determined that the air flow meter sensor on your Subaru vehicle requires replacement. The air flow meter sensor is part of your vehicle’s engine/emission control system and is monitored by the On-Board Diagnostic system. Should this component operate improperly, the engine idle may become unstable and the “CHECK ENGINE” warning light will illuminate steadily while the engine is running. Please contact your Subaru dealer and schedule an appointment to replace the air flow meter sensor with replacement parts at no cost to you. We regret any inconvenience this may cause, but we have taken this action to assure your vehicle’s proper performance.

Did it have a vin # range or anything? I wonder if my 99 will need it. I've moved around so much I probably won't get anything in the mail...

YOu could always just go to a Subaru dealership and have them pull up the records on your car based on the VIN. They'd be able to tell you whether your car is affected by the recall.

Sign up on the www.mysubaru.com website and you can pull up open recall's on your cars. Our recall notice was sent via e-mail from this site. The site uses your VIN number as the identifier.

shortlid - Our Legacy is an L has the EJ22 and an automatic tranny. The car is from Florida so I'm not sure about the Cali emissions. To get PIN you have to register on the site, they will verify your VIN and then send you your PIN.

SSR - I have no idea which other years or models are included in the recall.

I don't know about your cars, but my 99 30th anniv Legacy L wagon has a MAP instead of the MAF sensor. It was mfg after March 99 which is when, I believe I was told, they converted the 2.2L over to the MAP system. Could be wrong on that date but when you pop the hood and look at the intake side of things, there is absolutely no MAF any where in the intake.

Opie - are you getting any check engine lights as indicated by the recall?

No CE lights but have had chronic hesitation problems for a while. Tried different octane gases, new plugs, new fuel filters, fuel injector cleaning, etc with no improvement. Hopefully this will solve the hesitations! Scheaduled to be taken care off next Tuesday.

I got the pin in like two seconds via email. I am not affected so I am wondering if this is on the 2.2l engine models.

Opie - I had the same hesitation on my 99 L and I believe it's all related to the anti-knock sensor providing innacurate info to the ECU which then retards/advances spark (oversimplification of course) accordingly. I did the Single Point Ground on all 5 of my Subes and while I noticed significant improvement on the other 4, the 99 L was the difference between day and night. Hesitation gone, smooth shifts and power off idle all the way to red-line with no lag or drop in the power band anywhere. That's been one of the most positive mods I've done to the car.

Anyway - let us know what the Mass Airflow Meter recall does for your's.

Angry Beware of Stealership-Nate Wade Subaru, SLC, Utah

Our 99 Legacy Brighton Wagon was affected by the recall. The recall was performed, but did not change engine performance still has some hesitation on acceleration.

The bad news is that two months ago the OBD II system threw the trouble code associated with this MAF sensor, and the stupid stealership(Nate Wade Subaru, SLC, Utah) attempted to sell me a MAF sensor that was $400 for the part and $300 for the install. I told them that was outrageous and ridiculus. They charged me $80 for pulling, and clearing the trouble code, and I informed them that they would never see this vehicle in their service bays again. I went to another dealership in town, found out that they were quoting the wrong MAF sensor(which happened to be twice the price) and the install is a 5-10 min job. I new they were theives, but this was a bit extreme. After the trouble code was cleared, the problem did not reoccur; So I left it alone until the recent recall.

I had also called the SOA national customer service. They were no help, and rude as hell since the vehicle was out of warranty. No associate with SOA indicated that there had been problems with the MAF sensor. I still would like to know what prompted the recall? Does anyone know?

In and out of the dealership in 30 mins. Now maybe I can get my diagnoses fee back.

I got that notice for my MY00 Legacy Outback LTd. Never had a CEL light, scheduled with the dealer, took about a half hour, had two cups of their coffee (very small cups). and went home.

Still has a hiccup hesitation at the start, but my wife normally drives it, and it may not get beat enough to actually want to perform.

Default I've got hesitation problems too

2 weeks ago my car started hesitating worse then ever before. The car felt like it was dying or something, no power whatsover. I thought it was bad gas cause I went to this shady station by work, but the problem came back a week later. The CEL also came on and the car was idling horribly, their was a slight ticking noise coming from the engine. Well just yesterday I had a Suby tech pull the code and sure enough it was the knock sensor. The part's about $80 bucks and probably the culprit behind the pathetic performance. I'll let u guys know what happens.
