Default Sedan STI or Hatchback STI?

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new car. Right now I have a 05 wrx cgm. I was thinking of purchasing a new STI. How does the sedan compare to the hatchback? Also, does the plasma blue looks better in person that in pictures. Another option for me is to either get the new IS250 but I would like to stick with a subie though the IS is very tempting.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Sedan, looks better IMO. The new wing with the sedan looks great......I think I'm just fed up seeing all the hatchbacks or maybe that I can't see an STI with anything other then a sedan with a wing??

I picked up a sedan and really like it. I mentioned the STi to my wife and the words out of her mouth were "as long as it's not the hatch".
At first I was irritated because the hatch grew on me. But once I saw the sedan in person I was sold.

I would get the Sedan. I love the way they look but I've never liked the hatches.

I don't think anyone here can answer that for you. There's no mechanical difference between the two, so it's whatever you like better. I prefer the hatch, but others don't. *Shrug*

Not only is the sedan cheaper initially it will have much better resale down the road. Resale on the 2011 STI hatch will be hurt by the availability of cheaper 08-10 STI hatches and simply by the fact that it is a hatchback/wagon.

hatch was designed as a final effort in the WRC to improve aerodynamic stability. have you noticed that all WRC cars are now all hatches?

the hatch is also more practical... i have fit huge items into the back like full sized air compressors, big screen tv, etc. the sedan has no chance of doing that.

but if looks is your only concern, go for it.

I agree on personal preference, I went from a 05 STi to the 10 wagon because I wanted the extra room. I have a 6 month old so its nice to be able to put all the stuff in back and put big boxes in when I need to. Best of both worlds for me, it has the performance I like and still the practicality of being able to haul stuff.

In my 05sti I was pulled over 5 times, no tickets but pulled over a lot. Never been pulled over in my 08sti.

I've always liked the hatch since it first came out. The more and more I look at the Sedan, the more I think the wing is ridiculously obnoxious! if I do decide to get a sedan, i'll be look to swap trunk with a wrx for the wingless look. As of right now, i'm leaning more towards the hatch.

One more question. Sorry guys, i'm in the Navy so I'm currently in the middle of the ocean and have not gotten a chance to look at the new WRX/STI personally but does body and the fender flare for 2010 sti hatch the same as the 2011 hatch? I know the grills are different.

Yes the body is the same, the 2011 WRX also has the same exact body as the STi now, something to think about.

I've always dug the hatchback look. Seems more practical too. But, if you prefer the sedan look, go for that. From what I gather, they perform the same.

Ha! My wife was the exact opposite. I didn't go for the STI, but she was adamant about not getting a sedan. That was cool by me though. I had a GC wagon before, so I would have opted for the HB anyway.

I'd go with the HB. I like the looks better and versatility trumps all. We've got a kid and that, alone, makes the HB the winner for us.

Also, it's not just the sedan itself...the sedan wing is to way ostentatious and "look at me! look at me!" for me, and I'm not sure that you could ever call it "functional" on a street car, so I would, at least, go for the more understated look of the WRX wing and do a trunk swap (get it in a color that will allow you to do it easily) with a WRX. You'll have absolutely no problems finding an 08+ WRX owner willing to trade, or pay you money + their trunk in trade for the wing.

As far a resale goes, unless you plan to swap your car in just a couple of years, I wouldn't worry about it. That said, if you really do care about the resale value, don't modify the car. Unmodified WRXs and STIs with a couple of years on them are something people really look for down the line...so that they can then modify it.

Made a good choice because the sedan looks x9999 better than the hb

My old lady likes the sedan also but thinks the wing is a little over the top like me.

I've been thinking a lot and the new WRX sounds really good. I guess the WRX will be much more practical as a DD plus cheaper insurance and cheaper to mod than an STi. Any '11 REX owners reading this? if so, how do you guys like it?

Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it. As of body style, I'm still really undecided. I guess i'll make up my mind once I see them both in person and also which to get (STi or WRX) once I test drive both.

I had an '06 wagon and she liked that. It was also more handy at the time because I needed it to haul stuff.
Now we have a full sized pick up so I didn't need the utility of the hatch.
She doesn't hate the wing but I think that's her least favorite part of the car.
I'm still on the fence about it.
I don't think it looks too bad, I just don't like the attention it draws. I prefer to be sneaky...

How could you not like that wing? It's a trademark that differentiates the STi from a regular WRX (at least for me). I personally love it. Hatch is a pretty good lookin' car as well, but I'm more partial to the more angular lines of the sedan.

Bought the STi today. Don't know why but I made the choice of buying the PBP Hatch. I love it. Thanks for all the help guys. I know the Sedan will probably a better resell value but to me, I just fell in love on the way the PBP looked on the hatch.

Biggest factor when I traded in my 07 for my 08 was financing. That said, the hatch grew on me, if I went shopping for an '11, I'd take a hatch again.

I get a lot less negative attention in the hatch compared to the 07. Negative being cops following me around and every ****** Honda in the world wanting to race, every ****** time they're next to me. It's funny the first 2 weeks you own the car, it's not funny when some idiot almost kills a pedestrian trying to get you to "race" him at 2:30 in the afternoon... with my kids in the car.

Let's see, based off my 07:
1. Douchebag wing. Really, I get the classic styling and all, but the first thing a non-rally enthusiast thinks is "douchebag".
2. Hey cop, look at me! Really, it's a red flag to a bored cop.
3. Hey, wanna race! Its a red flag to street racer types, too.
4. Every time I look in the mirror.... wing. As an added bonus, the 07 wing neatly blocked the light bar on the Crown Vic following me all the time. Not sure how the '11's are.

The wing would be one of the first mods I made if I bought an '11 sedan.

Congratz! Hope you like it.

You should have bought the sedan instead.

I think it's cool that the new STi has now the option between four and five doors but I'm not sold on the styling of the sedan so I'll have to go with the hatch.

I think it grabs attention without being loud and obvious like the sedan with its wing and styling cues taken straight from the BMW's M line.

Plus its just so damn practical that it is really easy to live with it day in day out.
