Default Wheels are Peeling

I had new tires put on my 2006 impreza about a year ago and noticed at the time a few new chips on the rims. It has been getting worse over the past months and now there are chunks peeling off the rims!

Is this basically going to get worse and worse until I need to replate the rims somehow?

Lol.. as writing this, I hear familiar exhaust in the distance, turn head to road and a blue 2006 WRX drives by..

Yeah, it will rust, it's just like car paint.

Nothing I can do about this? Can they get replated? I dont even know what this material is.. is it aluminum or chrome, or something else?

How long do you think they will make it (I live in Maine - salty winters)

Have the wheels repaired and then powder-coated.
