That makes two 04-06 BFM flash cables for sale. I'll even ship mine for free.

Default BFM vs Tactrix

So I'm laughing my A** off right now. Bought a tactrix 2.0 cable off a fellow member yesterday, he somehow got it shipped last night and it came in today. After HOURS of fighting witht he BFM cable on Sunday I had the jumpers connected and car flashed in 90 seconds. Anyone who says the timing of the 02/03 cars is the secret is nuts. Turn key and press OK. I did it several times just to do some testing and it worked everytime so long as you didnt wait more than a couple seconds between turning key and pressing OK.

So -- I paid more for a Tactrix but the 90 seconds it took to flash the image made me forget all about the $$$.

The time has come, i hoped by this time to have video confirmation for the 02/03 guys but bad weather has kept me from the 3 hour drive to a tuning customer. It will happen i just can't put a deadline on it as of right now.

I do have an 02 sitting outside the shop waiting for a hybrid build, but it is gutted. In the mean time i'm going to drop the radiator/fan assembly in and the battery and do some testing on our end to try and make this more user friendly and less of a pain in the ass.

I'm going to officially pull support for 02/03's but state it has limited compatibility performing ECU writing that has some un-determined factors contributing to a procedure timing issue. But the cable will otherwise perform the functions of Learningview and Romraider logger without any issues.

Of course 2004+ will remain a no issue as of right now, but i will remind all customers to be sure to download the software package that we updated a week ago with new drivers.

If any of you guys have suggestions or what to chat about it feel free to hit me up, i stay extremely busy so i don't have alot of time to troll the forums. My email and my forums are all forwarded to my phone so i can work on the go if need be.

I will keep everyone posted as i work through this, and i want to thank everyone from here that has been exceptional in describing problems and helping us narrow down not only the bugs with our older drivers, but with the 02/03's and shedding some light that they need to go back on the work bench.

thanks for giving this your attention cody. i'm waiting to purchase when you can confirm compatibility with 02/03.

alternatively, what is your return policy. will you allow 02/03 owners to buy the cable to see if they can get it to work and return it if it doesn't?

Anything else I can try?

If an 02/03 owner wants to buy the cable they will need to under the assumption that it is just a "logging" cable.

I just don't have the resources to buy, mod, send out, buy more, then possibly eat more inventory in returns.

I hope to take advantage of the "warm" weekend that is supposedly headed our way, and setup the 02 outside as well as the protune i have to meet with to test around on.

yeah it would just put alot of me out in limbo not knowing if i would have to re-absorb them into inventory. On the plus side they are a no hassle logging cable for the 02/03 guys with the ability to flash its just a matter of tracking down where the recent hiccups are coming from.

i will keep everyone afloat though of progress

Wouldn't you need that blue/white connector on the 02/03 wrx's so you can flash it with that BFM Flash Cable?

I ordered one of the cables and have a used laptop coming. Hopefully they'll be here this week and I'll be able to run some tests.

Cody has gotten it to work with a bugeye and at least one person in this thread has: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2089143.

I'm in no rush so I thought I'd give it a try too.

I saw that post too but there was no real details about what they did to get it to work, driver versions, ecuflash version, etc. I spent way too much time trying to diagnose the problem with no success. Hopefully you will have better luck. I am thinking about trying the evoscan U or R cables but have been waiting to see if we can resolve the problems here first.

No. Only the Tactrix Openport 2.0 cable works with CANBUS cars.

2008 STI uses CAN protocol and the BFM adapter can't do this.

Guys, from photos I have of the circuit boards and components two different versions of the BFM cables, it is clear that these are not a copy of the "Tactrix 1.3" cables, or of any version, having the schematics of v1.1, 1.2, & 1.3 and pics of the 1.3 circuit board to compare.

The BFM looks like a permutation of the Vag-com. Smart use of drivers may get them to work, as owners of later WRX models report. Marketing it as a "Tactrix 1.3" really should stop. Surprised Openport does not speak up, as it was their design. Evoscan and some Australian outfit do sell the 1.3 , for a higher price.

Perhaps significantly, Openport uses serial lines that are not connected on the BFM parts. Things like switching on the 12V regulator (which the BFM does not have regardless) from the RTS line for flashing. Colby Boles of Openport would have to comment on the importance of that and the other lines not connected. The following circuitry is not there even were they connected. I suspect the reason for the failure to talk to early WRX models may come from the completely different circuit topology. No way an authority on how the K and L lines of an OBDII port are handled, in particular how to manage coms with a Subaru ECM.

Caveat emptor.

I have been trying with a laptop running Windows XP. As you can probably guess I got nowhere but in case my info helps here it is:

I tried Ecuflash 1.42 following the BFM video and couldn't do anything.

With 1.29a I got this same error:
[13:32:46.535] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[13:32:47.768] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[13:32:49.000] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[13:32:50.232] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[13:32:51.465] denso02_bootloader_cmd_start
[13:32:51.886] kernel get version
The only thing I noticed as opposed to the Vagcom cable you don't get an "interface close" message after the "kernel get version" message. Whether this means anything I have no idea.

I also tried all sorts of timing procedures, changing the baud rate, and changing the latency setting.

I guess the question now is is there any chance this might eventually work for the 02-03 models with updated drivers? Looking at robtmc's post it appears less likely.

so, it seems like from what I've read in this thread that the only people having trouble with this cable are the pre-2004 users. If that's the case I think I'm going to order mine up and give it a try. Figure worst case scenario its not too much money to waste if I am unhappy.

I'm trying a bfm flash cable, and I have problems with ecuflash 1.41, that`s the version bfm send me.
I'm trying now with 1.28 and with problems too, but I've gone far away than with 1.41.
I've opened a post with it.

and my car is a 05 wrx. I've readed the entire post, and after some investigations I found that my ECU is the same as 03 WRX, so Thats the reason why my 05 euro WRX can't be readed by bfm interface.
