Thumbs down bad day in high-tech land... (ottawa)

Well, I managed to dodge lay-offs during the time I was at Nortel and even left for another company last summer even though I wouldn't have been laid off.

It seems that my luck ran out this morning.. I just got layed off and so did 17 co-workers (about 30% of my company, but 50% of my department!). It sucks even more than I thought it would. Luckily, my girl-friend found a job on monday after a forced vacation that lasted 10 months... but hey, she's no engineer so bye-bye our plans for this summer (deck, finish basement, go on vacation...)

Anyone knows a company in Ottawa that needs a senior FPGA designer? I can also do ASIC design...

Sorry, I just had to vent...

My condolences!!!

I would also imagine that post-ENRON and now post-Wolrdcom, things are really going to be put under a microscope so any companies that are boarderline profitable are also going to be letting people go.

That sucks. I too left Nortel for "greener" pastures last year. We
are still in good shape for now, but cash in the bank won't last
forever. Certainly not planning any large purchases in the next
while.

Good luck..Stu

mart242,

Maybe you could get into automobile aftermarket electronics such as ECU development and programming/reprogramming? No one has yet been able to crack the Nissan ECU.

Be REALLY careful if your manager asks you politely "Please try to finish this project for friday, as I have lots of other projects for you..." :monkey:

Oh well... leave and learn...

edit: the little monkey wasn't inserted properly...
