ANY Subaru Transmission will fit ANY Subaru engine. As long as the final drive ratio of the transmission and the rear diff match, you are all set.

here is a link to a site that tells you which ones have which final drive ratios:

I would modify that to say, any Subaru tranny from an EJ (or EZ or EE or EG)-engined subaru would work.

i have a question about final drive. not to thread jack. i have a 2000 OBS final drive 3.900, that chart in the link says the all the STI 6spds have a 3.900 final drive. does this mean i can just swap the rear diff from an STI straight across? any axle or drive shaft differences?

The rear diff will swap in. You will need to figure out (redrill) the smaller bolt pattern on the input flange. You will also need the larger STi rear knuckles and axles.

OP: Most if not all manual Foresters got the 4.11:1 ratio. There are no 3.90 Foresters that I'm aware of, so check the link above for more info. Some early Legacies came with 3.90 and are suitable donors, same with some EJ18 Imprezas.....
