Question URGENT: Good Place near LA to Get Stripped & Frozen Lugnuts Removed? 1 Broke in Half!

Hi everyone,

Well, it's been a rough 24 hours. I started to do the headlight mod on my WRX last night around 7pm and didn't finish until 9am today!? I used to think I was pretty mechanically-inclined/handy, but the procedure was time consuming! It turned out pretty well. I'll post pics later, but I have a more pressing issue to address.

Does anyone know of a good place in the LA Area that can safely remove a couple of stripped & frozen lugnuts off my VOLK RACING WHEELS?

The dang tire shop that put on my hubcentric rings a couple of days ago torqued the locknuts (McGard) too tight. I was just trying to remove my wheels to adjust my coilovers, and one of the locknuts stripped. Another one BROKE IN HALF!?

I guess my other question is: Is it safe to drive w/4 lugs? The fifth one (broken locknut) is still on there, but as mentioned, only half of it is. I really hope I don't have to tow my car to whichever shop that can remove the lugs.

Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

CL

p.s. Any idea how much would be a reasonable price to remove the lugs?

If you stripped the studs, then I would suggest a Subaru dealership, as they will have the studs in stock. I haven't worked on my Suby much, but if my years of european auto mechanics applies, then it is usually a simple process of getting the lug nuts off, pull the rotor off (doesn't require new wheel bearings), and then hammering out the old stripped stud, and then pressing in the new stud. Re-attaching the rim re-seats the stud. This is the process on Saab's and Volvo's, and is so easily engineered I would be supprised if Subaru didn't follow suit. If you are un-willing or not able to, then take it to the dealer.

If the other four lugnuts are secured tightly, then yes it is safe to drive. No Canyon running though! The reason for five is redundancy. My old Renault 5 only had three lugs nuts. This limited the number of custom wheels, and if I ever stripped one then I was screwed. 4 out of 5 is OK as long as you drive it easy.

Hey, I worked in a tire shop for a couple of years, and I have seen this a lot actually. YES, it is safe to drive with four lug nuts. As mentioned above, I wouldnt go crazy, but ordinary driving is fine. To replace your studs and get your lugnuts off, I would suggest any shop that also does alignments. Why alignments you ask, well I have found that for some reason they all seem to replace studs as well. It really is not that big of a deal, and if you have to pay for it shouldnt cost that much. At the tire shop I worked at, if we were the cause of the problem we paid for it. I think it was like $20 to replace a stud at a local shop.

I hope this helps!

Did you ever think of taking it back to the shop that put them on?

Torque wrenches are your friend. That's why I never let tire places put my wheels back on even when they offer to do it for free.

DISCOUNT TIRE in El Monte, which is where *A LOT* of people buy their aftermarket wheels--VOLK RACING, WORK, etc.

I'm going to post in another thread about the ordeal they put me through. Let's just say that I was trying to be level-headed and let them correct their error, but they responded w/terrible customer service and made things even worse--created other problems & expenses! To top it off, they made me track down and pay for the parts required to correct THEIR mistake.

Needless to say, I WILL NOT be bringing my WRX or any other cars to DISCOUNT TIRE ever again!

CL

Btw, I appreciate everyone's feedback and suggestions.
