Default Cali. emision heat shield rattle?

We have a '98 Legacy L wagon with EJ22 and auto, and Cali., emissions it has developed a heat sheild rattle at 2300 rpm. right under the trany but I can't pin point it exactly. No bolts on that particular shield what should I do to find and quiet it?? Is there a place they often rattle at??

shortlid, I've read recently about people using sheet-metal screws, threaded between the shield and the exhaust at various points, by trial and error, to silence the rattles. Mine's getting annoyingly noisy too, and I'll also be looking to tighten up the shields soon. Depending on your location you may be able to just tighten up the fasteners, if they're not rusted solid, but from past experience I can say the harmonics seem to defeat most efforts!

I removed all of it too... my bolts were rusted solid, but i know a guy with a shop, so we just put it on the lift and torched the bolts and ripped it all off... much better now... it was really embarassing driving around with all that rattling.

Default How many miles?

did you all have on your car(s) when the heat shield started to rattle? I too have a 99 L 2.2 with 39K but everything seems as tight as it was day one. Both 98 BD's 29K and 51K are tight too. Is this somehow specific to the auto versions or both? 5 spd will eventually get the full Brullen header back treatment so that's will then be a non-issue but was curious about your shield situations.

Default Remove??

I can see how the screws would work but REMOVING THE SHIELDS!! wouldn't that develop HOT spots on the floor pan and melt paint and carpet!! How about starting fires the next time you park in a feild!!

Heck, firefighters like to put out fires.

I haven't noticed any "hot spots". We are not the first to do it and I doubt the last.

Default OK, now what!!!

OK, I had my Mom rev. the engine to the RPM where the rattle is. I pin pointed the rattle to the front pipe cover around the front exhaust pipe off the (LH)/drivers side bank, as it is called in Haynes. In VT we bottomed on a rock and it scraped and dented the lower (LH) lower pipe cover so now it contacts the pipe running inside it and reverberates, there is suppose to be a air space to keep the pipe and covers separated. When I finally got the out side bolt off it resulted in it getting LOUDER!! The inside one is so rusted I can't get it of!! I tired a SS hose clamp with no luck. I was thinking about taking it off and leaving it off or replacing it. But on the '98 EJ22 with Calif. emissions the upper and lower front pipe covers are crimped together unlike the one in Haynes that just has clamps! I am thinking about shimming it with washers and putting a new bolt back in to see if it can increase the gap, but what should I do if that doesn't work start cutting it off with the Sawsall!! How would I thread screws in in my perdicament??
