Default homemade adjustable short shifter

My buddy owed me a favor so I put him to work.... The lower ball is turned from Delrin plastic and threaded onto a tool steel shaft. The lower shaft is attached to the aluminum block by a pinch bolt and the distance to the lower ball is adjustable. The aluminum center section houses a delrin bushing and steel sleeve for linkage attachment. The shaft is longer than stock and uses the same 12x 1.25 thread on both ends and is locktited into the aluminum block. It also has a 12mm wrench flat machined into it in case it needs to be removed.

I'm pleased with the outcome. the shift knob sits about an inch higher but the throw is reduced by 30-40%. Shifts feel more solid now and with the taller know I no longer elbow the center console. I prefer the knob to be close to the wheel so I don't have to reach far in an emergency. The whole project cost me exactly $0.

does your friend want to make me one? if so pm me thanks.

also I think for the bottom ball you don't need a flat spot like the factory. It might make for better feel. iirc the kartboy one is a complete sphere

Depends on the year. 97-07 WRX are a full sphere. 08+ is a larger ball and has a flatspot.

That's great. You should think about marketing it if it holds up well...

Since the shaft is longer, how about a pistol grip version ala '70 Dodge Hemi Charger complete with the shaft bent to place the pistol grip closer to the driver...ahh, the memories that would bring back...LOL

Sweet setup. How much height adjustment do you get from it?

The ball does need a flatspot due to the depth of the socket. The shorter the throw adjustment the taller the shifter, plus with the use of a jamnut on the shaft you could have some more adjustment there. I was going to make a curved shaft for it but after driving the car I don't want to change a thing.

I'm sure he would be interested in making more, and there would be further refinements to the design.

I just started my major in Automated Machining Engineering. Is there any generic specs that would be universal between the 2010 and a 2004? I would love to get some dimensions from you.

I'd want one if you can make it like the MODE racing one. Adjustable throw and adjustable height =D
