Default should I get WRX or Legacy?

Hi,all:

I went to the dealer for service last week and saw a black 2002 2.5GT Legacy in the lot.

Wow, it's really beautiful and bigger than WRX~

Actually, I'm thinking of trading my car for Legacy bcuz it's a lot roomier than WRX, right ?

Will it feel "sluggish" with the Legacy's 165 HP + auto ?

Should I wait for the 2003 Legacy ? I've heard that there's gonna be a turboed Legacy next year but this is just a rumor.

How do you think ? I'd like to hear from you Legacy guys !

thanx in advance!

Is your RS an automatic or a real car? If it's an automatic, then yes the Legacy will feel somewhat sluggish due to the extra weight it's pulling, but not too bad. If your RS is a 5-speed then the Legacy will feel very sluggish because of the automatic.

Yes, the Legacy is substantially roomier than a WRX. That's why Subaru has the two different models.

If you and all your friends & family can all sit in the back seat of a WRX and be comfortable, then by all means get a WRX. Its a question as to which you value more lots of power, OR decent interior volume. I am not sure when/if a Newer, more powerfull performance Legacy will be available... but if you arent a serious "Performance" driver, and just want some additional power, perhaps you might be happy with the currently available LEGACY OUTBACK Sedan/Station Wagon with the more powerfull H-6 engine configuration (seeing as you are looking for something with an automatic) ?

There have been rumours of a more powerfull Turbo, Twin-Turbo, or Supercharged Legacy in the works for years now, and nobody (other than SOA) is really clear on if there is any validity to the rumours.

Talking more room- not!

O.K. just look at the specs in the brochures. The Impreza has more headroom, more under the wheel room, more front legroom and only an inch and 1/2 less rear legroom, but two additional inches of rear headroom.

You have a 2002 RS? It is lighter then the Legacy by 500 pounds with the same engine, so yes the Legacy will be more sluggish. Why are you getting rid of the RS?

I am not one to talk. I've (well me and my husband so technically 4 each) been through 8 Subarus in 7 years. I now own a 2002 Legacy GT Wagon. I could have had a WRX for the same price, but I thought it was too much work to drive with the turbo kicking in at 3500 RPMS and the loud cabin noise compared to the quiet Legacy. Plus the rear cargo room in the Impreza wagon is more like a hatchback, it was very hard to put my childs stroller in the back of it, whereas the stroller is swallowed up by the Legacy, plus tons other things.

Other then the above, the Impreza is funner to drive due to it's shorter wheel base and it's sports car image. The GT is also very fun but more refined and elegant. Drive both back to back and see for yourself. The answer should be clear as soon as you do.

WRX interior material is inferior compared to Legacy.

I have been debating this question for a while. My 2001 GT will be up for sale in just a few months but I don't know what I want to get next. I may have to leave the Subaru family. I am sick of the underpower of the Legacy's I have had and the WRX well its just kinda ugly. I have no idea what to do.

I can believe the front legroom - there are very few cars in the world that have restricted front legroom, as manufacturers kinda have to plan for the front seat being occupied all the time.

I can also believe that the Impreza has more headroom, but unless you're a giant I can't see that being an issue. I can wear a helmet in my Legacy (which is smaller than the '00+ Legacys) and still have plenty of room - and that's with the moonroof.

"Only" an inch and a half less rear legroom in the Impreza doesn't sound like much, but try sitting in the rear seat of both cars back-to-back (with the front seat adjusted for a 6' driver) and you'll see that 1-1/2" is a big difference.

Last but not least, what about rear shoulder room and hip room? To me, those two numbers are way more important than head room when it comes to seating comfort. Put three people in the back of an Impreza and three people in the back of a Legacy and you'll see what I mean.

The Legacy is a bigger car. End of story.

Cool Bigger car?!

Everyone here seems so on the edge lately! I don't get it! Do you guys need a jacuzzi or something to relax a bit? This is my only non-mommy adult time. I use this forum for my fun, not to be torn apart.

All I know is my husband is 6'3" and his head is smashed up against the top of our Legacys due to the moonroofs and he had actual headroom in the Impreza. My hair touches the top of the car too and I'm only 5' 11". The shoulder room is the same. As far as people in the back seat, I have no idea. All we carry in our wagons is one 22 month old child.

Both cars are wonderful creations and to each his or her own!

Note to original poster. DO NOT GO INTO DEALERS. Look away if you do. Walk in looking down at your shoes. It's not worth all the thousands lost on every trade-in for something different, but really so close to the same as what you already have. A word from the not-so-wise!

Heather -
Nobody is try to tear you apart. From your above quote, I suspect that you are comparing front headroom of a Legacy with a moon-roof VS. a WRX without the moon-roof. Also one of my big reasons for staying away from the Impreza was rear-seat room (its really cramped back there). As someone who has experiance with actually owning both vehicles, we appeaciate your input.

A quiet ride and better interior materials are also good reasons to select the Legacy over a WRX that I did not mention. Thanks.

Me sentiments exactly! Although I would like the power that the WRX has, I wouldn't trade in the roominess & look of the Legacy. The Rex is just plain fugly compared to the Legacy IMO.

I think both Legacy and WRX are very good cars so make some of us hard to choose.

I appreciate your input.

Maybe the Legacy is not a LOT bigger than WRX, but it IS bigger. can tell you that the MY02 RS/WRX's rear seat is really small. It can only sit two adults comfortably.

My uncle used to have a 97 Legacy. It is really quite inside the cabin compared to my 02RS which is quite noisy.

Yeah, MY02 RS and WRX are not so different. They share almost everything except the engine. If you're not an aggresive driver, why bother buying WRX and pay more for the insurance?

Why I want to trade in my car ? Well, I just like the refinement and elegance of the Legacy......

Could not have said it better my self. I would like to see those flared fenders from the my02 sedan on a new legacy gt though.

my $0.02...

we've had the 95 since new. the wrx for a month. i've been in a loaner 02 2.5 gt for a week and was jonesing pretty badly for boost in the end

about the current legacy... mushy seats. weird fabric patterns. i like the last-gen dashboard design more compared to the current one, although the current one uses much better materials. wrx interior is cheapo in comparsion as well, but what did u expect from the lowest model on the subaru totem pole? but wrx seats are one of the better ones out there and the legacy ones are lacking.

for some reason with the 2.5gt i didn't like the headroom, even with the seat all the way down.

i sort of liked the shift gate pattern allowing me to go from 4th to 3rd manually on the fly, but it's no 5spd. if u have to stuff 3 people in the back the wrx suffers.

but if u have a heavy right foot like me it's a huge can't wipe the smile off my face relief when i returned the 2.5 gt for the wrx

Default wedding plans?

i was at a wedding two weeks ago, and my legacy carried me, my girlfriend, and four adults to a hotel room after the wedding.
my gf and i dropped off the bride and groom, and the best man and maid of honor at a hotel room after the reception. YES, all four grown (large) adults in the back seat, with tuxes and wedding dresses.
poofy hair and vails, (plenty of head room).
of course, the maid of honor was on the best mans lap, but THEY STILL HAD HEAD ROOM.
what more can you ask for in a car.
and no, they were not circus midgits, they were full grown adults.

I'll say -"Defenitly get Legacy "-
I had the same problem when i bought my car. First I was going to get a Impreza, but i decided to buy Legacy because it has more space. Now I'm kind of regret of getting Legacy 2.5 GT sedan instead of a wagon or Forester or Outback. Still i'm proud that i got Legacy (I love my car). My friends told me that going out in my car is more comfortable than going out in my other friend's car, which is a Audi A4. All of my friends including me complain how small is the backseat of the A4.
If you want to make your friends or family happy, you better get them comfort.

About Legacy power I think 165 is just enough unless you want to use your car to drag/race.

Bottom line bigger cars are more useful than powerful cars.
Where can you put a bike in a Ferrari?
In my car I can put my mountain bike just perfectly in the back seat taking out one of the wheels of my bike .

I don't think that there is a Legacy turbo coming. Maybe it's the 3.0 (H-6 220ps) coming next year. I'm not sure.

There aren't a LOT of body kits for the Legacy but there are a few very good looking kits. The bigger question is how much$. The kits that are out there are primarily from Japan so shipping can get expensive. You can check out most all of the kits at www.SubaruReview.com

I say go for the Legacy!

Talking They are all right!

I take it back. You guys are right! The WRX is a lot smaller inside then the Legacy, other then headroom and under the wheel legroom that is. Man is it small! I just drove the 5th one and yes it is loud on the freeway. Could be the tires. No wind noise, just loud inside cabin noise! But I did like the short shifter a lot and it was cute and fun, just no where the size and elegance of the Legacy! They had a Blue WRX and a White WRX parked next to a Silver and a Titanium GT, I must admit, the GT's looked so much nicer

Speaking as someone who's owned both a '98 Legacy GT wagon, and now a WRX wagon, here are my opinions.

Room: The WRX is more comfortable for me, with my abnormally long legs. My head isn't as close to the roof interior with the WRX, and when I am in the proper driving position, my thighs don't hit the bottom of the steering wheel as they did with the Legacy GT.

Interior fit and finish: Both cars are excellent. Newer Legacies are nicer, but not by a lot. But the WRX doesn't look like a "cheap" car by any stretch of the imagination, despite the whiners comments on the WRX forums. The WRX is quieter than the 95-99 Legacy, and as quiet as the 2k+ Legacy. Both cars (Impreza and Legacy) were stiffened, which helps noise reduction characteristics a bit.

Usable room: I can carry my bike (58cm road frames) in both cars with both wheels on. The only difference is, with the WRX, I have to turn the front wheel a bit, so that it clears the passenger-side seat, unless I want to just slide the passenger seat forward. The WRX wagon has more utilitarian-type tie down points than the Legacy too, though they might have changed this for the newer models.

Performance: The Legacy doesn't feel as slow as it is, because the 165-hp boxer has some excellent torque characteristics. Mind you, this is with a manual. With an autobox, a Legacy is going to feel sluggish compared to your RS. With a manual, my GT wagon could run with many an RS, btw. But, in terms of handling and acceleration, the WRX obliterates the Legacy. Granted, it's a car that requires a bit more "work" than the Legacy, but as the guys from AutoWeek said, all that work is pure pleasure.

Looks: The 95-99 GTs are sho-nuff lookers, that still turn my head every time I see one. The 2K+ sedans are beautiful, but Subaru ruined the wagon with the hump in the roofline, so they could make a single roof for both Outback and Legacy. The WRX wagon looks far better than the sedan, which has a boy-racer look that I don't find at all appealing. Everybody comments on how nice my silver WRX wagon looks. Nobody ever commented on how nice my GT wagon looked.

Bottom line: Both cars are excellent, but both will feel sluggish with an automatic. The WRX gives you nifty stuff like a six-disc changer stock, and they're now coming with boost gauge and short shifter installed, which is neat. If you're a modder, you're going to grow frustrated with the Legacy.

I drove a WRX, and for me the decision was a no-brainer. I almost hurt myself rushing to trade in my GT wagon. A turbo Legacy would certainly complicate matters immensely, however...
