Default shifter question

hey guys i have a 98 legacy outback that the shifter doesnt return from 1st gear side...mec says its bushings, but then says its worn out too badly for replacement bushings.....my question is are all subaru shifters intechangable?

can i use a forrestor shifter or an impreza.....will they work or will i have to get back the same shifter......or what are my options???

You might check underneath and see if it has the return spring thats missing. i believe that the older leggys on that gen had an external return spring much like the 98 impreza's did.
