Well I've talked to a few people with a 6-speed, axles, hubs, diff and driveshaft and DCCD...all for around $3k...coming from donor STi's (taller gears).

08+ or older? 08+ seem to go for $5-6k or more for the full swap. Older ones are cheaper but all the parts aren't compatible due to the extra width. And you're buying an old, possibly beat up tranny.

This right here. Is there any way to really verify the internal condition? I guess just have them crack open the transmission to take pics or something??

The second one is just the tranny, so you'd spend quite a bit more than that. The first link looks like a pretty good deal, although I still think there are a few other things you would need (clutch master cylinder? hubs? etc?). I'm not really positive on that.

That's another big issue. You'd really want to tear it down and inspect everything. But that's a lot of labor and probably won't be done before purchase, so you're still taking a risk even if you spend the money to have it inspected after you buy it.

Doesn't matter though. I'm not getting a 6 speed. Ruled that out a long time ago.

As a random fun fact, I asked a local Subaru dealer to give me a quote for a brand-new 6 speed into my 2006 WRX and they came back with: $15,000 - 16,000!! This included brand new tranny, hubs, brakes, axles, rear diff, drive shaft, clutch, flywheel, shift linkages, master cylinder, and labor.

I know there are ways to do the swap that allows you to keep the R160 diff, 5x100 hubs, axles, and brakes, but I thought it was pretty funny to see what a Subaru dealer would charge for a complete swap with new parts.

That just blows my mind.

Doesn't confuse me anymore why they quoted me $600+ just for an SPT Short Shifter install

it makes sense for it to cost that much, its a lot of labor and a lot of complicated, low demand replacement parts

I think it's a mistake to swap in a stock tranny, return the car to stock, and sell it. Most everyone I know that goes down this path ends up buying the same car a year or two later. The statement is always the same too and it goes something like this, "I shouldn't have sold that car, it was too much damn fun." It's such a huge waste of money to start over.

If it was my car, I'd either replace the broken parts or replace with a low mileage used one. I'd drive a lot more conservatively when it comes to slamming gears, I'd go with a softer clutch, and I'd reduce the power a bit. With those sort of power levels, I'd just expect the tranny to break every few years or so. I'd always be on the look out for a decent used 5MT and have it ready to go. When you're pushing twice the power as stock, things are going to break. Whether it's a WRX or a Z06.
