Post Part One of SSC Negativity Clarification

A personal statement from the SSC President, Amanda D. Haines, Subaru Enthusiast and fellow I-club.com member:

Good evening everyone, first I want to apologize for all the confusion, misrepresented statements, miscommunication between myself, and Kelly Subaru’s position in the SSC and members of I-club.com

The following message is from Tim Kelly, Owner of Kelly Subaru in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Hopefully his message, in response to e-mail I sent to salesman Alfred Odister at the dealership will clarify questions surrounding Kelly’s involvement in the SSC.

<will attach that later, thought I emailed it to myself, now I can't find it>

Now my personal address of the issue at hand:

I have read some of your comments surrounding the formation of the club. How I personally involved myself in this was through contact with Alfred Odister at Kelly. At the time the May 19th meeting was decided to be scheduled, Alfred notified me of the interest of Subaru of America in helping to support a club started by Subaru enthusiast owners. The Southeast Subaru Club in no way compensates for, or replaces the North American Subaru Impreza Owner’s Club. The SSC was started, as our Mission Statement reflects, to connect a group at large of Subaru owners in the southeastern region of the United States to form an organized club of enthusiasts to engage and participate in activities such as Charity and Volunteer events, automobile related functions such as rallies/autocross/ and shows, and to bring us together as friends and family alike.

Kelly Subaru is not a chosen “hub” dealership of the SSC. Kelly has been nice enough to offer use of their facility if we so choose to need it. Kelly Subaru in no part or way is affiliated or associated with the SSC. Their name will not be attached to our logo or club at large. Kelly would like to merely get the Subaru product name out more to the public through clubs.

i-club.com was a site used to contact as many Subaru owners possible.

Since posting the message for the meeting, I myself and Jason Randolph (JasonRan) have been the only two known to Alfred Odister of Kelly who have on their own taken upon themselves the time to coordinate a regional club. I was encouraged by Alfred to involve myself, as the first meeting was deemed unsuccessful in anyone choosing a leadership role.

SOA’s position:
Subaru of America will in no way or forms support ANY club including the SSC without any positive activity reflecting Subaru’s product. This is the reason why we cannot use their logo without permission.
We have nothing to show of organized club activity. Subaru honestly will not support a group that represents immaturity, misconduct, and ill representation of their quality product.

Alfred Odister does not post on I-club.com because he is in no way affiliated with the SSC besides trying to help us get started. Alfred and SOA right now can only offer us items that he refers to as “trinkets” such as pens, t-shirts, stickers and what ever Pro Drive can give us for free.

The “Mandatory” Meeting:
The meeting per se was not necessarily “mandatory.” Alfred informed me in conjunction with SOA to have a meeting because due to lack of action at the present time, SOA wanted to remove them as support. As a whole, we need as much corporate support and funding possible that we can receive. This is why we could not “reschedule” the meeting for a later date.

The SSC in no way meant to intentionally ignore those in North Carolina, South Carolina or Florida. I had previously contacted some of you in those areas to voice your questions and comments prior to the meeting so those could be addressed at that time. The best of my recollection and record, no one responded to me with any questions or concerns. The responses I received stated to “let you know” if there was anything you could do, not to postpone any type of voting or decision making. Dealership sponsored events or participation has nothing to do in consideration to control. Everyone in the Southeast region is encouraged to solicit their local dealership in getting more involved in events and supporting Subaru owners in having a club and letting us use their facilities for meetings and activities. No single dealership controls what the SSC or any Subaru enthusiast owner does. Nor should they. We are not “sales opportunities” for these companies that sell Subaru’s product line.

We need representatives from all the states and surrounding city areas to voice ideas and concerns so that needs can be met. I, Amanda Haines, am not going to, nor willing to “dictate” any ideas, or decisions for the entire South East Region. A fully functional and organized Subaru owner’s club has to function based on agreed views by all of its members.

The SSC will represent ALL Subaru owners, including Outback, Forester, Impreza and Legacy alike. We want to attract all age groups and races with interest.

I thought I had given ample notification for questions prior to the meeting, therefore I apologize for the lack of communication on my end. How do we expect members that are not registered on I-club who want to participate that may not have time to vote online in such matters? If you all want to re-vote on SSC club officers then I suggest we do so if you want to participate in the SSC. Otherwise it would not affect those currently holding offices.

And so it begins

Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I read Kelly Subaru has nothing to do with this except its offering its facilities to who ever needs it. If this is so there is no need to argue over dealerships. Here is what I suggest. Once a month or once a whatever we should have a meeting. The meetings should occur at each states Premier Subaru Dealer, Tenn=Kelly, NC=Prestige and so on. There we can disscuss whatever. But at the same time while at those dealers we should connect to I-club and also post any info. So there will be meetings at each state and on the I-club at the same time for those that can't make the trip.

Secondly the next act in my opinion is straten out who is what in this club. But I have one question. What do these people do? Are they organizing events? Talk To Subaru? What? I'm actually not understanding what this club is going to be doing for us. Can that be explained to me.

Thanks

I agree somewhat. We need to have meetings at the same time on the same day, once a month (...an idea...). And like turk said, the people who cant show up can connect to the i-club chat or web board and at least have part and not have to worry about driving distance or what not... And were going to have officials in each state, so fret not we still need more officials IMO. But I agree with the Florida and Carolina folk...its too far to drive to TN for one afternoon. I want to be a part of the SCC club, only if we can get this bickering to stop.

Cool

See... and all of you thought i was being an a-hole for what i was saying. i basically said the same. maybe not quite so tactfully .

this new club was in no way meant to exclude, alienate, or replace what already exists.

the SSC used i-club to post specifically because of what may of have said... this is the most actively cohesive group of owners.

and it is because of the great work of Jerry, Dale, Nick, and many, many others that SOA wants to be involved.

that being said, we have to prove to them first that we are willing to do what is required to get more from them. and that includes promotion of the club as a postive, charitable, and nuturing environment (Gawd i sound like a liberal)...

the reason i did not post any better "facts" was that Amanda was gonna post and anything i said would take away from that more than i already had...

i do like the "cyber meet" idea though...

now let's be civil and discuss like the adults we all pretend to be from 9-5 m-f

In reply to the "opie for president" topic...

Well I do have to admit the Hillary Clinton comment was comical but not appropriate, I wish you guys would all try to understand only what we've tried to start. What you fail to understand is that the reason I started posting on i-club though I have been reading it for a year is that I hoped to find cool people who had the same interest as I, and hopefully a cool guys and gals to hang out with. I sold Subaru's once, I'm not a newbie. I'm young, attractive, and smart, try finding a guy who wants to talk cars and not about boobs or your current modeling career. Give me a break. I want to help, not hurt. Sorry if I accidently "stole" anyones thunder. Just because they are new does that mean they are not competant to hold a role?
I guess I'm disappointed, that's all...

This makes me not want to be a part of even i-club if you are going to make fun of someone some of you don't even know.

Today saddened me greatly. I hope you are happy. I thought Subaru owner's were nicer and less competitive than this.

Thanks,
Amanda Haines

Also..I'm not naive to the fact there are many "old school" i-clubbers who have made efforts to create the site, run it, and attend events. Duh! I know you guys are creating clubs and already perform as such.

Like was previously stated i-club was only used to reach a nominal group of people, don't think outside of the club we aren't tryin to reach other Subaru owners.

We all want something real to be apart of, buy I won't stand around and be knocked off because you fail to hear me and form opinions without knowing me. I will post Tim Kelly's comments tomorrow from work. It will clarify more your concerns on the dealership. Here's the meetings minutes:

Southeastern Subaru Club
5/19/01

1) Mission Statement:
It was read aloud to all attendants. Stressed the need to show a positive attitude, no competition between members, and all Subaru owners are welcome.
A vote was taken. The mission statement was voted in unanimously.

2) Events:
Wanted members to think of events that they would like the club to attend. It doesn’t matter if it’s a car event, Monster truck show, cancer awareness, or gardening event.

3) Charity:
Would like to come up with a charity that we all would like to participate in. It would be a positive for the club, examples: Habitat for Humanity, AID awareness, etc.

4) Logo and Travel Banner:
Need to come up with a logo. The simpler the better. Want to have people submit possible logos and have a vote at next meeting. We can’t use the Subaru logo in any submissions. Can submit logos as of June 1st .
Subaru has said they will provide a travel banner for us. What would we like to have on it?

5) Club Officers:
Nominated and voted on club officers.
President: Amanda Haines
Vice President: Jason Randolph
Treasurer: Ronald Driver
Secretary: Sandra Poore
Voice of the People: Mike Paone

6) Dues for Membership:
Discussed dues but nothing in concrete. Talked about a one-time registration fee. Would get a t-shirt and stickers with fee. Maybe a stair stepped dues platform depending on interest in club.
How are we going to set up an account? It is still in up in the air but we thought of starting a checking account. The checking account would have to be with a national bank, something like Bank of America. It would take the signatures of the President, Vice President, Treasurer and the Representative of the Club Members to get money out of account.

7) Next Meeting:
Vote on logos
Pick a Charity

There are still many issues that have to be discussed with civility and maturity by ALL of us. Of course questions were going to arise, but the SSC was separate of i-club, not to REPLACE it. We plan to promot i-club in conjunction to the SSC. I don't want to be a part of any of this if we ALL are not willing to make it succeed strongly.

We have many milestones to achieve. Can we tackle this all TOGETHER. Why do some of you have to hate me without knowing my intensions?

I feel like some of you aren't listening to any thing I have said since before the meeting. I wish concerns would have been posted prior. But now we all have to work together to form ANYTHING we all can be proud to associate our own names with and Subaru's name.

Sorry for all the stress. I don't have misrepresented ideals about any of you and I hope that we can all be great friends.

I certainly think cooperation is possible, but a cooling down period will have to be served.

Not all members will be happy, but all members require proper representation. This can work, but with a recent influx of members, the Southeast area has grown far beyond what most would've imagined. Please be patient and keep an open mind for all.

That's it.

Like I said earlier it sounds good. Thanx for clearing up all the preconceived notions everyone had about the SCC.

I now fully understand what you are trying to accomplish (I think I do anyway)

I dont know if anyone else was in the same boat as me but my main concern was not about the formation of this club, but its association with the i-club's southeast members and forum. I only thought it was unfair for a small group to put themselves into a position where they say they represent a whole. And since you reassured everyone this is not your intent and your are separate, I have no more problems.

As for dues, that I do not forsee myself paying. I am cheap . well the main reason why I dont think i will is there is still this issue of me not having a vote. Now MAYBE if there were regional chapters of the SCC like SCC-NC, SCC-FL, then i would gladly ante up the Gs.

Edit: Talk about spelling errors! I wouldnt want anyone to think i was stupeed

I have no problems with cooperation and I am very pleased with the efforts being made to build this club. I do want to point out though that there was nothing in the original post about the voting of officers or on a club mission statement. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Foru...ML/000771.html
Check it out. All that is mentioned is NOPI.
This being said I would like to offer forward my apology to everyone for starting this. I was not attempting to start a flame war, although my efforts ended up doing so. I would like to offer up my own personal white flag of peace to anyone I have offended or that has offended me in this matter. I am more than willing to let bygones be bygones.
However, I still feel that all of those who are interested in this club should have a say in the process of its creation and I am in favor of a "cyber meet" if you will, to discuss these things further.
Again I apologize to all who have gotten their blood pressure raised by this matter today (especially the moderators) and I hope that we can have a peaceful resolution to the situation without resorting to an armed conflict.

Sincerely,

Kent

I have no personal hatreds to Amanda or anyone on this board. I am sorry for any statements that I have made that may have disturbed anyone.

I have monitored what was transpiring with this club and can't believe that it happened this way. Here are some of my observations and questions:

1) Why was there no draft club charter posted here in advance for us to read and provide comments?

2) Why was there no official calling for supporting members based on so called charter and documentation there of official members?

3) Why was there no official calling and campaign of nominees for officers?

4) Why were there no due process election and voting of official officers outside of this mandatory meeting?

These questions are paramount on recognizing the proper fundamentals of establishing a club with a sound foundation.

The items mentioned at the meeting should have as a minimum been disseminated on the i-club board for all to participate in the SE prior to the meeting. This club truly has been formulated in a vacuum with no consensus from the masses. Therefore, there is no hope of a cohesive body of members.

The above 4 questions should have been addressed before this fiasco. Just plain fundamentals! Therefore, we could have avoided all these problems and bitterness.

God bless all and I agree let's step back and reassess this situation.

Thank you Kent! We can organize a "cyber meet" as well. These are all great ideas. And don't feel left out of voting upon officers or mission statements. We apologize for not forwarding this information prior to the meeting. We are all not PERFECT. We can always re vote. I would support that. I love the mission statement as is though.

Please be patient with us the larger we form. And WE WILL have Reps from all areas. We did discuss this at the meeting. We need you guys to elect who you want to represent your area's concerns and ideas. We can't do this without you. It was hard to have a meeting with only 13 from TN AL and GA.

There will be local chapters of the SSC. We just needed to form the regional group first.

Keep the ideas coming. If we can have a fair organization, I'm sure everyone will want to join.

Things we have to further discuss as a group are things such as member dues and a small registration fee. This will come later, but we don't need to get into it now...we'll schedule another online forum so everyone has a fair say.

I hope anything I have said tonight has cleared some issues for you all, I just wished that you guys would not have jumped down my throat before knowing any facts.

Kind Regards,

Amanda, President, SSC

(gee...I hope this doesn't kill my chances of any of you single guys wanting to go out on a date with me..."Hillary" needs some "action" too, you know )

Answers to Questions:

1) Why was there no draft club charter posted here in advance for us to read and provide comments?

Answer: This was not brought to my attention or anyone’s therefore it was not considered.
It’s a great idea. There is no rule that says we cannot go back and do this. I personally should have posted the meeting outline before the meeting, unfortunately I did not have it drawn up until a few days prior.

2) Why was there no official calling for supporting members based on so called charter and documentation there of official members?

Answer: This would also relate to first question’s answer.

3) Why was there no official calling and campaign of nominees for officers?

Answer: This would all relate to action taken based on if question number 1 was done in the first place. We apologize.

4) Why were there no due process election and voting of official officers outside of this mandatory meeting?

Answer: Repetition again: see #1. There are more “should’ve, could’ve, would’ve” than “DID.” We can’t change what we should have done. Let’s learn from our mistakes and make this better now.

“These questions are paramount on recognizing the proper fundamentals of establishing a club with a sound foundation.
The items mentioned at the meeting should have as a minimum been disseminated on the i-club board for all to participate in the SE prior to the meeting. “ –Brad

Amanda: I totally agree, and we regret we now see the errors of our ways. Guys we have to stick together if we truly want to do this.

“This club truly has been formulated in a vacuum with no consensus from the masses. Therefore, there is no hope of a cohesive body of members. “-Brad

Amanda: I disagree here, sorry. There is hope. Look at all the responses though initially negative at first. Obviously you people CARE. Let’s make it happen now that we’ve tapped into how we need to communicate amongst ourselves successfully. I think this, if any has let us know how we all feel, and how we want to be included.

We do need to step back and re-asses. But do not condemn what was not initially understood or meant to harm, it was a group effort. We ALL did not communicate properly among ourselves. Now we are given the chance to make change.

Thank you all for helping to open lines of communication now and make this right. See we can make a good change without using harsh words!

Kind Regards,
Amanda Haines, President, SSC

Damn--go out for a beer and all hell breaks loose.

I think two guys took some pics and ya she is (wife smacks me in back of head).

Look I think the club COULD be a cool thing. I wouldnt have driven 6 hrs if I thought otherwise. If everyone is so up to it, maybe you guy should organize a local meeting and then get a representative from your area to go to the next meeting (help him/her out with costs). This would help form a state group rep with issues and such for those not able to drive. It was also discussed that when/if we get other subaru models in the club, they should have someone on the board.
Any Brat owners out there or Forrester or ...

Well, just as I was about to throw in the towel, sell the Subaru, and go buy a Honda where there are some mature drivers (sarcasm alert, sarcasm alert), this thread has began to renew my faith in the members of this board. I want to thank everyone for taking a deep breath, calming down, and becoming more rational about the SSC. I think that we will all find that, if we work together on this, we will have one heck of a club to be proud of. I would also like to thank Amanda for writing such a well written explanation of what is going on with the club. Thanks again, and I look forward to the betterment of the club.

Ok, who went out for a beer without me?
Ok enough beer jokes.

Seriously, Amanda, thanks for clearing up the confusion.
Also, kudos for sticking with your idea even when it seemed unpopular. Some people may have been offended, insulted, or like me had their feelings hurt (What can you do, I'm sensitive ) BUT even then, you stuck with it and stayed pretty calm, and you were determined to explain things.

If anything else, you've earned my respect. Sticking up for yourself can be tough!

By the way, Nick, thanks for the compliment. I don't think of myself that way, but it's nice to hear it
